How do I get the smell of cooking oil (coconut and/or vegetable oil) out of the house?

Is there anything I can do - other than opening winows - to get rid of the lingering smell? Spicy cooking oil is not exactly stinky, but i'd rather the house smell nice and fresh! Has anyone had success with an air filter?

Thanks! How do I get the smell of cooking oil (coconut and/or vegetable oil) out of the house?
I use the Home Care Air Purifier / Ionizer by Soundesign. I usually turn it on when I begin cooking so the smells don't drift through the house. Have used this for 10+ years. Wouldn't try to live without it!! Works in minutes! Works well also if you have guests who smoke. How do I get the smell of cooking oil (coconut and/or vegetable oil) out of the house?
Fabreze (spelling?) is the bomb. Use it on curtains, carpets, upholstery, any cloth that absorbs the oily odors near the kitchen.
i do alot of frying for my kids and what i usually do is burn insense.
here is what I do all the time-I fry alot of fish, so know what you mean. When you are frying, keep a small saucepan of fresh lemon and water boiling on another burner, The steam from the lemon gets caught up in the oil, so house will smell of lemon (or grapefruit, limes) When you are done frying, spray all around the house with a mixture of 1/2 water, 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and a squeeze of fresh lemon. works for me I get little spray bottles at wal mart to use for the spray
light a match from the living room on back

  • Is there a test to tell the difference betweeen canola and vegetable oil?

Could you tell by just looking at it? Is there a more definitive test that could be done to tell the difference? Like if I have two bottles of unlabeled oil, how would I know which one is canola?

Thanks so much !Is there a test to tell the difference betweeen canola and vegetable oil?
Canola is a tad lighter color than vegetable oil and has a distinctive after taste.

Edit: Wesson is what I use also and if you take a small taste of each you will know which one is the canola.. it has an odd after taste to it.

Edit 2: If you have the 48oz bottle of vegetable oil I can tell you that the number on the bottom is 705-5 =)Is there a test to tell the difference betweeen canola and vegetable oil?
By appearance, Canola oil is a little paler; not as golden as some vegetable oils. But - this will also depend on the grade of the oil and the blend.

As to a test? Chemist might be able to give you a definitive answer. Taste is a little different, but again, this will depend on the blend in the vegetable oil.

Is vegetable oil the same as crisco?

I have kitty cookie mix that says to grease the pan with vegetable oil. Do you think they mean Crisco or liquid vegetable oil?Is vegetable oil the same as crisco?
They mean liquid vegetable oil for this purpose. Pour about a teaspoon onto the pan, then spread it with a paper towel. It'll help make it easier to get the kitty cookies out of the pan when they're done.

And if you don't have any liquid vegetable oil... go ahead and spread on Crisco, it's just vegetable oil that's been processed to make it a solid at room temperature. Is vegetable oil the same as crisco?
Crisco is a solidified vegetable oil made by hydrogenating liquid vegetable oil. The oil that pours from a bottle is not processed like that. You could use either since the Crisco will liquefy under heat while you are baking - it is not part of the cookie ingredients, just a nonstick coating on the pan.

If kitty cookies are really intended for cats do they contain things like fish guts or chopped mice that cats would find appealing? I hope you have a separate cookie sheet you use for them to keep the people-cookies on a clean surface.
Use whatever you have available .. vegetable oil (liquid or solid), a spray, like PAM, butter, olive oil .. etc etc .. you are just greasing a pan .. so the food won't stick to it.
Vegetable oil and crisco are 2 different things. Although they are both a vegetable oil so to say... crisco is a vegetable oil product. It contains solids and is not always interchangeable with the oil even if you melt it. For greasing a pan you can really use either or but in cakes etc....if I do use oil I also flour the pan or use a few teaspoons of the mix to dust the pan since I've found that straight liquid oil tends to make items a little crispier than I'd like them to be.
They probably mean crisco but you can use vegetable oil, but use it sparingly.
You can use either one. It's really about what you have on hand. Crisco is a form of shortening I'm not sure if its animal fat like lard or if its from processed vegetables like some oils are.
they mean liquid vegetable oil but you could use crisco but it would changes the flavor
well crisco is like shortning. you know the white stuff that is greasy. they are two totally different things.

    luvs
    Vegetable oil = liquid oil

Crisco = shortening (although the brand ';Crisco'; also includes liquid oils)
Crisco makes shortening and vegetable oil. Shortening is vegetable oil refined into a very ';silky'; solid texture. If the recipe says vegetable oil use the liquid.

But for cookies I usually spray the pan with Pam or use a Silpat (a silicon baking mat).
I would grease it with crisco. They're not the same. Crisco has a higher melting temperature and will not cook into your food as much as vegetable oil will.
    Crisco actually works best.
If you are referring to Crisco the solid shortening kind vs. the liquid in the bottle. It's ok to use the liquid Crisco in this instance because the smoking temperature is higher than for solid shortening.
That is totally unimportant to the recipe...Crisco, or even Margarine, Butter etc. any NON-stick would work fine.
They are pretty much the same thing. I always use crisco when it says to use vegetable oil. You'll be fine with either one.
Crisco is Vegetable Oil, so yes...
    I think so
Crisco is a brand name. Crisco makes shortening, cooking oil, and cooking spray. If the recipe says to grease the pan with vegetable oil then that is what you should use. I would use something like a paper towel or a napkin to spread it evenly across the pan.
You can use crisco, margerine, butter or oil. The oil won't cling as thick to the sides of the pan, but should work fine, as cookies are usually high in fat and don't stick to the pan to bad.

How can you tell if french fries have been cooked in vegetable oil or beef lard/drippings?

Can you identify, by taste, if french fries have been cooked in beef lard or drippings, and if so how? What's the difference in taste between that and if they are cooked in vegetable oil?How can you tell if french fries have been cooked in vegetable oil or beef lard/drippings?
Not sure how to differentiate between them.

You can do like me and not eat deep fried anything... greasy food is disgusting. How can you tell if french fries have been cooked in vegetable oil or beef lard/drippings?
most places don't use lard or drippings but i would think one could definately tast it if they did. it's a pretty strong difference. if you're eating out, you can ask.
since when is vegetable oil vegetarian?
If they taste good they were cooked in animal fat.
ask whoever is making them ...................

Yes defenitely a difference in taste , lard leaves a film on the roof of your mouth .....

also if youre familiar with the aroma of vegetable oil you can smell the difference too ...........
    check for animal fur/.

Why is it illegal to convert your car to run on vegetable oil?

*Technically* - because of the Clean Air Act, the EPA requires all fuels to undergo testing. No one has officially registered vegetable oil as a fuel, so it doesn't get tested. For that reason, legally/technically speaking, according to the federal government, it's illegal (the fuel itself, not the conversion), and theoretically you could get fined.

However, the EPA isn't monitoring it. I doubt anyone has ever been fined. Especially when it does not increase the emissions. Why is it illegal to convert your car to run on vegetable oil?
some states its illegal to do if you don't pay taxes on it, part of the taxes in gas is used for maintenance of the roads , so when you use veg oil you don't pay taxes for the wear and tear you put on the road, also its mostly that big oil co. have politicians in their pocket and get laws pasted so people don't cut into their huge profits. Why is it illegal to convert your car to run on vegetable oil?
It is not illegal in IL, but initial cost may prohibit use. You need to get filters and pumps, storage barrels, and a steady supply of oil. Besides you will not get very good mileage or power out of it. Bio-diesel sucks!
It depends where you live. Its usually more expensive than illegal to make that conversion.
It is not illegal in Ohio, where are you located?
idk maybe in some state it illegal.
    its not..

Is vegetable oil the same as regular shortening?

Making a white cake.Is vegetable oil the same as regular shortening?
No, you shouldn't substitute oils for a solid fat, or vice versa. Try using apple sauce or other fruit puree. It'll make the cake dense, and moist. Is vegetable oil the same as regular shortening?
I always use butter, but any shortening will work- vegetable oil, crisco, or margarine. DO NOT USE OLIVE OIL!!!!! Good luck.

Can vegans have vegetable oil or olive oil?

I would think that they could but i've been reding up on it and they don't really say anything about either (especially olive oil) in either the positive or negative sense. In addition to that, could they have margarine that doesn't contain whey? Can vegans have vegetable oil or olive oil?
If I could recommend anything, it would be coconut oil because it contains a higher level of saturated fat. Veggans have a very high risk of developing intestinal deseases because of their lack of saturated fat. Our cell's walls are made of Saturated fat and Cholestoral. Don't forget that. Of course, protein and fat are also necessary to heal our bodies. Olive Oil is a lot better for you than Vegetable because of the extraction and heating process the oil companies use to make the oil from Soy and others. It is like eating the opposite of Vitamin C. (Vegetable Oil is Oxidized and Vitamin C is an Anti-Oxidant) As for margarine, it is made out of Vegetable Oil with added chemicals. (after the heating process, the butter is gray and must be flavored and dyed) It is 3 times as bad for you. Hopefully there is a better substitute out there that doesn't contain Soy Oil.

I have a lot of respect for what you're doing if it's to protect animals form being killed. But if you're doing it just for your health, I'd at least eat real butter, eggs and other stuff with higher amounts of fat. You need it BAD.Can vegans have vegetable oil or olive oil?
yes they can it is only animal products, any product that has no animal product is okay
Yes they can. Vegans just don't eat anything that comes from an animal.

They could have margarine, but check the label carefully to ensure it contains no animal products.
    Olive Oil - Yes

    Vegetable Oil - Yes

Margarine sans whey - read the label, but I prefer earth balance.
The question answers itself-OLIVES, not from animals/VEGETABLES, not from animals. Most margarines do have some kind of animal products but there are some that are vegan.
Of course we can have vegetable oil and olive oil... they're made from vegetables. And olives.

You can find vegan margarine. Earth Balance non-hydrogenated buttery spread is labeled 100% vegan and it's really good (better than any margarine I ever tried as an omnivore.)
I would assume off the bat that olive oil would be ok, b/c it is made strictly from pressed olives. But as far as vegans go, I would think that the source, where it is made..the process by which it is made....( like in a factory where no animal product is processed etc.) As little as I know about Vegans, I do know that they don't eat meat(doh) or by products of meat. Therefore olive oil is not made from meat, but could be considered ';corrupt'; if made ina factory that process' meat :)

When it comes to Vegans, it's on an ethical standard too.
Vegans can have anything that isn't meat or isn't an animal product (that would include silk, wool, honey, etc).

I enjoy olive oil all the time in my cooking, and vegetable oils are fine too.

Yes, dairy-free margarine is fine (as long as it is 100% plant-sourced).
Well, Popeye can have Olive Oyl with his spinach.
Are there animal products in vegetable or olive oils? No.

You may want to research what vegan means.
yes a vegetarian can have olive oil, but i'm not sure about the other things. There are different degrees of vegetarians and the ones that eat olive oil are called fruitarians. They eat only fruits, nuts, honey, %26amp; olive oil

  • Should I use vegetable oil, olive oil or margarine to saute my pork chops?

They are center cut and thin sliced pork chops.Should I use vegetable oil, olive oil or margarine to saute my pork chops?
It's a matter of taste really. The benefits many claim about olive oil being better for your health is correct, but the benefits are VERY little. Do a test yourself %26amp; cook three different pork chops with the three different oils %26amp; see which one you like the best %26amp; then you'll know for the future cooking sessions.Should I use vegetable oil, olive oil or margarine to saute my pork chops?
    Olive oil is the best.
Olive oil with a little butter for flavor.
I would use olive oil, it's healthier than the rest.

My mom used to cut the fat off the pork chops, fry up the fat and then use that grease to fry the pork chops. If you aren't concerned about healthier - you could use that method!

Enjoy - yum, pork chops sound good...
I would go with olive oil
extra virgin Olive oil is best
Use vegetable oil. Olive oil has a much lower smoke point and margarine doesn't sautee well.
Light olive oil and clarified butter to heated pan, then the pork chops.
Olive oil burns the quickest %26amp; margarine sucks. FYI , pork doesn't have to be cooked well done %26amp; thin center cut pork chops don't have to cook long @ all ( med well is safe )
    Olive oil!!!!
Out of all of those, olive oil is definately the best. It's not as greasy and slimy as veggie oil and it'll lend a better taste than margarine would
Olive Oil.. Its a much healthier option to the other two.
Olive oil, best for you and best tasting. I use it to saute everything I saute...unless I want an asian flavor, then I add a couple of drops of sesame oil to the olive oil. It is great on pork, chicken, shrimp and veggies.
Olive oil. Also, I wouldn't think that it burns quicker than margarine %26amp; I know it has to be extremely hot before it does burn.
I usually cook in olive oil or extra virgin olive oil because it is healthier than vegetable oil.
Olive oil or canola oil. Both healthy oils, and you're not using a high heat, other than the first few minuts to brown..
    I would suggest olive oil

Is Publix originalspread 65% vegetable oil butter the same as blue bonnet regular butter when cooking?

I've cooked these cookies only a few times and every time I used the blue bonnet regular, will the taste and texture still be the same as with the Publix originalspread or should I go buy the blue bonnet? Is Publix originalspread 65% vegetable oil butter the same as blue bonnet regular butter when cooking?
In baking, usually if a recipe calls for ';margarine'; or ';butter';, you are not supposed to substitute one for the other. Is Publix originalspread 65% vegetable oil butter the same as blue bonnet regular butter when cooking?
Blue Bonnet isn't butter, it's margarine. The 65% vegetable oil stuff isn't even margarine, it's spread.

Both margarine and spread should be left on the grocery store shelves; it is full of trans fats, and is as dangerous as cigarettes, in terms of heart attacks and cancer.

Other than the substantially higher death factor, margarine is the nutritional equal of butter, and is 80% fat. If you substitute a 65% fat product, you'll get substantially different results.

Dump that spread in the trash can, and head to the store to buy some butter. Not margarine. Real butter.
if your going to cook with such a high fat content , why not just use real butter, not much difference in fat content, not artificially made and taste a lot better

Where can I go to buy cheap vegetable oil to make biodiesel?

Can I simply buy vegetable oil to make biodiesel? Is it possible to pump WVO and filter it to make biodiesel? Would it simply be cheaper to to buy it from a producer and what would be current average price for that right now?Where can I go to buy cheap vegetable oil to make biodiesel?
If could ask around at restaurants and see if they can give you some, you could also just buy a lot of vegetable oil from the supermarket although after you've paid the fuel taxes it probably won't be any cheaper than what you can get from the pump (yes, you do have to pay tax on biodiesel you make yourself, that means filling in extra forms, if you don't you can be charged).Where can I go to buy cheap vegetable oil to make biodiesel?
there is no cheap oil, at Sams Club its $6/gallon. Used oil can be filtered. You will have to buy the used oil, filter it, mix it carefully, and the net effect is that you'll have about $/gallon in it. Then with used oil, if you mess up cleaning it and mixing it, your fuel system may have to be dissembled and cleaned, cost $1000.

Bio diesel, even from a factory costs more than petroleum based. You can by a 5% to 20% mix at stations for a little more than regular diesel if you desire.
Yes, you can. The cheapest I have seen it was $6.65/gallon at Fred Meyer. BUT, using virgin oil for biodiesel is wasteful. It is better to use WVO (which is not only free, but recycled) I have been told that if you buy oil by the trainloaf you can pay $0.80/gallon, but I doubt that is true.

BTW, any oil you use has already been taxed AT LEAST once. The government doesn't deserve your money and can never prove you didn't pay cash at a station for your homemade bio. Don't feed the pig.
actually most restaurants will give it to you free, then filter it good before using it

How long can a car run on vegetable oil?

On the tv show Mythbusters all they do is fliter the vegetable oil and then put it in the engine. They didn't do anything else to it. I was wondering how long will that work? Will your cars engine break down if you don't mix all the other stuff with it? Could it work if I did that? How long can a car run on vegetable oil?
Any diesel engine will run on veg oil provided it is filtered to under 3 microns. And the only reason for this is to make sure the oil is pure enough not to foul the injectors. In a modern engine it is not recommended to run more than about 20% Vegetable oil because it produces a small amount of nitric acid that over time will eat the injector pump. Its not a problem with an engine that has had a specific conversion to do this. It's basically a kit that replaces the fuel lines and puts a separator in front of the injector pump to siphon off the tiny amount of nitric acid as well as any water that creeps into the system. Bio Diesel has a similar problem But not as much as the strait veg oil. The problem is not with the veg oil, it's with the engines produced today. Older engines used a plating process to line the inside of the injector pump. Newer engines don't use this process because of cost. How long can a car run on vegetable oil?
Are you crazy? The reason that they always warn viewers to ';not try any of this stuff at home'; is that just because it might not be a myth does not mean that it necessarily works. Running a modern gasoline engine on vegetable oil would be an excellent way to destroy any mechanical integrity in a pretty short time period. No wear additives, no ability to change viscosity in reaction to heat. Again I ask, are you crazy? Even motor oil from the dollar store is going to perform better than vegetable oil
a diesel engine will run fine on straight vegetable oil as long as the outside temperature is relatively warm (above 70掳F) As it gets colder, there is a potential for the oil to solidify and clog the works.

do not try it with a gasoline engine.

Mythbusters used a Mercedes Benz diesel car.
First, your car needs to be diesel powered.

Some minor adjustments will be required, but it can run indefinitely on vegetable oil.
as long as the car can heat the veggie oil hot enough, it will run longer than with diesel

Basically if it is filtered and clean, it can be used in a diesel engine as is. The main problem would be its cloud point or the point at which if it gets too cold it will not flow properly.

You can run a diesel on melted butter if you can keep it in the liquid form!!

  • Can I use olive oil in place of vegetable oil for baking brownies?

It's my brother's 17th birthday and I wanted to bake him brownies. If olive oil doesnt work, is there anything else that can be used in place of it?Can I use olive oil in place of vegetable oil for baking brownies?
yea u can use melted butterCan I use olive oil in place of vegetable oil for baking brownies?
If it's ';pure'; olive oil, not extra-virgin. If it's very green in color, or it smells strongly of olives, you don't want to use it; it will make the brownies taste like olives. If it's yellow and has no odor, go for it. If you can't use your olive oil, you can use corn oil, canola oil, or melted butter. (If you need to use melted butter, increase the amount by about 10%, and decrease the amount of water or milk by the same amount, since butter has some water in it.)
    Noooooooooo, they'll taste AWFUL!

After you make soap, first you dissolved vegetable oil in ethanol. what happens to ethanol during the reaction

I measure 23ml of vegetable oil into a 250-ml flask. add 20ml of ethyl alcohol,20ml of sodium hydroxide and stir under heat for 20 minute. then put it in a flask with ice cold H2O to cool it. then add150 ml of saturated sodium chloride to the soap mixture while stirring.and vacuum the top of the H2O off the top. After you make soap, first you dissolved vegetable oil in ethanol. what happens to ethanol during the reaction
The ethanol is put inside just to increase the overall fat - water NaOH surface. (because the ethanol dissolves both of them). The hydrolysis of the fat happens only on this surface, so it makes the reaction proceed faster. Only change that could happen is esterification of fatty acids, that are created, but the environment is too alkaline for this to happen (FA salts are unreactive.) So no chemical change happens. Also the soap is less soluble in the ethanol than in the water so it help to salt-out the soap. After you make soap, first you dissolved vegetable oil in ethanol. what happens to ethanol during the reaction
doesnt it get changed to glycerol?

Corn syrup instead of vegetable oil?

I want to make brownies, but I don't have any vegetable oil. I know they have different viscosities, but can I use corn syrup instead of vegetable oil or will it make the brownies too thick? Is there anything I can use as a substitute for vegetable oil?Corn syrup instead of vegetable oil?
You can use applesauce, I really don't think corn syrup would work.

Wow, I guess I was wrong - this is what I found...

Fruit purees or applesauce can be used as oil substitutes for baking purposes. Add skim milk to applesauce or fruit-based purees for liquid cooking oil substitutes. Butter buds mixed to form a liquid, corn syrup, and cooking sprays may also be used as good oil substitutions.Corn syrup instead of vegetable oil?
Corn syrup is completly different than vegetable oil. It is MUCH thicker, and would make your brownies MUCH MUCH MUCH too sweet. Although you might be able to use applesauce, I would recomend just going out and buying some vegetable. Its really cheap if you just get it at a grocery store. At tops maybe $3.00?
i've never done this, but I think it would be better to use applesauce instead of corn syrup. I think if you use applesauce, you should omit the eggs.
no- don't use the corn syrup, do you have mayo? Use 1/2 cup mayo for each 1/2 cup oil, or use melted butter.
gosh. You really ARE lost in lost.

Where do I buy bulk quantities of vegetable oil?

I want to experiment with using veg oil as diesel fuel. This stuff is supposed to be cheap, but I can't figure out where to buy it. Supermarkets have only small bottles and they are expensive. Rapeseed oil or corn oil would be good but I need hundreds of gallons. How much per gallon is it typically and where do I get it near Phoenix AZ?Where do I buy bulk quantities of vegetable oil?
call some restaurants and see what kind of oil they use..they'll gladly let you have the leftover oil after they have used it. You need to filter it out though.Where do I buy bulk quantities of vegetable oil?
For that much oil?? Make friends with a restaurant owner. You'll get it wholesale. I'm not kidding. I often ordered stuff in for people and marked it up only 10% over my cost for them. And then my distributors loved me for buying more stuff. There's you ';in'; right there. Win-win for both of you.
    maybe at Costco?
Sysco Food Service Corp. OR ask the manager at your favorite restaurant to put you in touch with his food purveyor or sales person. I opened restaurants for 25 years. I know what I'm talking about.
Sams, Costco, BJ's and most grocery stores.
Not sure, but everything I have ever seen on Discovery channel says that places like Mcdonalds and Burger King will GIVE you their old grease.

I have plenty of olive oil... will that work okay? I have vegetable oil, but it expired in February of 2007 - could I still use it and be okay? What can I substitute vegetable oil with in making brownies?
Olive oil has too strong a flavor to be put in brownies. I would imagine that your vegetable oil is probably ok. You could also melt the equivalent amount of butter or margerine and use that; 1 stick = 1/2 cup of oil. I always use real butter in my brownies, and they taste a LOT better, even if it does mean that I have to go easy because of the cholesterol! What can I substitute vegetable oil with in making brownies?
The expired vegetable oil is probably just fine. I would look at it and smell it, and if you see nothing wrong with it visibly and it doesn't smell foul, use it.

Otherwise, don't use the olive oil. Bad idea.
No - Canola oil will work though.
    Applesauce.

    For real.
I would use apple sauce..not sure with olive oil..does ur veg oil smell different? if it does I suggest you to dump it if not quickly use it in ur daily cooking..
Olive oil will change the taste of the brownies, probably for the worse.

    Feb oil would be OK.
apple sauce. i always do, they are moister, taste better, and are healthier!
it should be ok, another substiute that I have used in the past is applesauce, I think it replaces the oil and the eggs. I used it with a cake mix though and not sure of it would go well with brownies. Also I think any other oil should be ok, like olive oil

  • How do we get vegetable oil from veggies when veggies aren't even oily?

Maybe avocadoes are a bit oily, but most veggies if you squish them are just pulp and watery, not oily, juice. Where does this oiliness come from? How do we get vegetable oil from veggies when veggies aren't even oily?
It doesn't come from vegetables as such; it is from other things such as rape seed or corn (which is a legume), which is termed vegetable because it isn't animal. How do we get vegetable oil from veggies when veggies aren't even oily?
Vegetable fats and oils are derived from plants and are composed of triglycerides. Nominally, oils are liquid at room temperature, and fats are solid; a dense brittle fat is called a wax. Although many different parts of plants may yield oil, [1] in commercial practice oil is extracted primarily from the seeds of oilseed plants.

The temperature-based distinction between oils and fats is imprecise, since definitions of room temperature vary, and typically any one substance has a melting range instead of a single melting point.

Vegetable fats and oils are both edible and inedible, and include processed linseed oil, tung oil, and castor oil used in lubricants, paints, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial purposes. Although thought of as esters of glycerin and a varying blend of fatty acids, these oils contain free fatty acids and diglycerides as well...

Corn oil, Soya oil, Peanut oil, Sunflower/Safflower oil, Olive oil, all of these veg of sorts when crushed and some fermented have an oil property like the one young lady said a waxy overview, some are extracted by crushing and pressing others by crushing heating and then pressing, when making bourbon whisky a oil layer from the corn is formed and alot is refined into cooking oil.

Rapeseed or Canola was used during the Second World war as a lubricant for airplanes, here in Canada it is the No 1 cooking oi used by households, I like peanut oil also but more for Asian dishes, I get one from Hong Kong it is the Lions Head brand, all are good for you nutritionally.
    From vegetables that are oily!
but vegetarians are such nice people...why would you want to extract oil from them?!? (wink wink)

What changes are required to run a diesel engine on vegetable oil. How much does it cost?

What are the specs on running a vehicle on used vegetable oil? I am wondering what sort of conversions need to be made to the engine and fuel systems. How much will it cost to implement these changes? Does running a vehicle on these fuels cause engine problems, even if basic maintenance is performed? What changes are required to run a diesel engine on vegetable oil. How much does it cost?
You're kidding, right? You actually think this is somehow environmentally helpful? Turning ';food'; into fuel? Whether it is Bio- Diesel, Ethanol, or used vegetable oil it is a bigger waste than readily available fossil fuels. The low rated efficiency of these scam fuels and the water consumption associated with their production, negates any benefit they might provide. The other factor is that you will significantly reduce the life of your engine! Amazingly enough, the engineers that designed it did not envision using anything other than a petroleum based fuel...What changes are required to run a diesel engine on vegetable oil. How much does it cost?
It is only considered a fact in the small minds of the brainwashed and uninformed enviro-sheep... Report Abuse

You don't convert the engine. You convert the Veggie oil (or cooking oil) to bio-diesel. After the conversion it is basically like ANY DIESEL FUEL and it can run in ANY DIESEL CAR.

    good Luck...
You need to replace all the rubber that comes in contact with the vegetable oil. Vegetable oil will rot away normal tubing and gaskets. Other than that no changes are needed.
technically none are needed, just make sure you filter the used cooking oil, and yeah it should run without a problem. i would simply google for more info

Hello, can anyone tell me how to i remove a vegetable oil stain from paper?

The stain is from fried meat wrapped in tissue and accidentally packed next to an official document.Hello, can anyone tell me how to i remove a vegetable oil stain from paper?
I don't think that you can; it has already soaked and damaged the fibers; I think that you can just try to sop up the most to remove what is excess by pressing a paper towel on the spill to try to remove as much as possible to make it less visible.

P.S. As a paralegal, I can tell you better to have a legal document with a stain on it then one that looks like it has been tampered with. It wouldn't be the first one and won't be the last; I have seen coffee stained etc ; ironing may burn the original as well .Hello, can anyone tell me how to i remove a vegetable oil stain from paper?
Get some brown paper - like from a brown paper bag (not parcel wrapping paper) - hold it over the stain and iron the brown paper. With any luck the oil will be absorbed into the more absorbant brown paper.

    Good luck
Try spreading cornstarch or another superabsorbent power over the oil stain.
It's hard to do that. Try using eraser but I'm not sure if it will work.

Can I use corn oil in my quick-mix brownies instead of vegetable oil?

I once substituted the called-for vegetable oil with canola oil, and the resulting brownies had a hint of gasoline. Will corn oil be okay to use instead? Can I use corn oil in my quick-mix brownies instead of vegetable oil?
Its a healthier subsitute really . It shouldn't affect the taste at all , oh ya save a brownie for me please :)Can I use corn oil in my quick-mix brownies instead of vegetable oil?
Something else must have mad them taste like gasoline - Canola would not do that. Canola is a heart healthy oil and helps to reduce the bad cholesterol, as does olive oil. Yes, they can be interchanged in both cooking and baking.
Yes. Most vegetable oil is a blend of soy, corn, and canola oils, but corn oil will be fine-just use a touch less, since it is a heavier oil. Enjoy those brownies!
Many vegetable oils are made with or completely from corn oil. Corn is a veggie, so it will work just fine.
i have used corn oil and soybean oil to make my cakes and they have come allright so i guess it will be ok.
Corn is a vegetable so it will be fine.
    Yes, that will be fine.

How would one convert used vegetable oil into fuel for home heating in a fuel oil heat system?

Looking for any info on how to convert used vegetable oil into usable oil for a fuel oil heating system. How would one convert used vegetable oil into fuel for home heating in a fuel oil heat system?
You want to turn it into biodiesel, but it's not a trivial thing to do, and - unfortunately, there are technical issues with burners, viscosity etc. that mean that it's not that easy to convert over to pure biodiesel in the heating system. At present, most companies who are selling biodiesel for home heating are selling it as a mix with conventional oil.

If you want to learn more, however, there are a lot of biodiesel sites out there - Google biodiesel, and you'll find all that you need to know.

One good site is journeytoforever: http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel.ht鈥?/a>How would one convert used vegetable oil into fuel for home heating in a fuel oil heat system?
My guess the same way that you do with bio diesel. You filter all the rubbish out. Boil off any water impurities. And treat it with methylated spirits and remove the glycerine.

Vegetable oil leaked and discolored my granite counter top, can it be fixed?

I left for two weeks and a can of vegetable oil leaked out of one of my cabinets and onto my granite counter top and seeped into it. Now there is a big ugly mark where it soaked in. Is there any way to somehow get the oil out of the rock and get it back to the way it is, or am I screwed?Vegetable oil leaked and discolored my granite counter top, can it be fixed?
Make an ammonia or hydrogen peroxide paste. Read on this site for step by step instructions with special notes for ';oily'; stains:

  • What is the best way to get rid of used vegetable oil?

Since I recycle I don't want to take a milk jug full of vegetable oil and throw it away so what's the best way to get rid of it, is there another way? What is the best way to get rid of used vegetable oil?
this is a tough one because when you store the used oil, it goes rancid very quickly and cannot be used for biodiesel

as it is vegetable oil, you can mix it in with composting material, but you have to be careful with rodents, so this is not best in a bin....

I usually dig holes in between rows of plants and spread the amount outWhat is the best way to get rid of used vegetable oil?
Try to find a place that collects it for use as bio-diesel. There are diesel vehicles that use the recycled oil instead of regular diesel. Many fast food places that use lots of oil donate the oil to persons who have these diesel vehicles. Perhaps the recycling center would know where an oil collection point is, or you could look at the restaurants. Many of the fast food places near my home have oil collection containers. Maybe an online search for bio-diesel might help. Good luck.
There are companies that collect waste oil and grease from restaurants for recycling. They may accept your wastes. I personally just collect my waste oil and grease into used jars and throw it in with the trash, but I have never really liked doing this and would recycle if it were easy.

Can I substitute butter made from vegetable oil for the real stuff in brownie mix?

What do you do with old vegetable oil?

I live in California if that matters. I know pouring down the drain is bad but can I just throw it in the garbage? If I put it on the curb in a milk jug will they take it?What do you do with old vegetable oil?
We're in CA too. We just put ours in a container if it's liquid and toss it in the trash. If it solidifies, then just scrape it into the trash. What do you do with old vegetable oil?
I'd re-use it. But if you're not wanting to do that. Just pour it into a bottle with a screw om top and throw t away like you would do anything else. You know the garbage men aren't searching through trash to see who threw their cooking oil in there. Hope this helps.
put it in a container, put it in the fridge to harden it up, then throw it out.
Pouring oil down the drain is only bad if it's hydrogenated. Vegetable oil is non hydrogenated(it stays in a liquid form at room temperature) so you can pour it down the drain. You're just not supposed to pour animal fat down the drain, because it solidifies at room temperature.

ok so i want to make some french toast and just realized i have no vegetable oil. i do have olive oil but i dont know if thats just as good. or could i use butter? help! What can i use instead of vegetable oil for french toast?
Butter will work, in fact, I would have used butter first before any kind of oil.

Do not use Olive oil, though it will technically get the work done, your toast will taste like olives, which I can't imagine will be good. What can i use instead of vegetable oil for french toast?
You could use spray PAM, olive oil, butter, margarine. Your choice, each has it's own special flavor. If you have grapeseed oil it is awesome and could also be used. Peanut and sesame oils are also fun.
When I make my french toast, I always use a non-stick pan. If that isn't an option, you could use butter or a little cooking spray.
    Butter
Definitely use butter, it will be sooo good.
    I have always used butter.
butter ... that's all I EVER use for French toast! You WANT that good buttery flavor!

Can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil in a cake mix recipe?

I wouldn't recommend it because olive oil tends to have too strong a flavor. It might be OK if you have the extra light olive oil though. If your oil has a lot of green color to it, I'd say definitely not.Can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil in a cake mix recipe?
yesCan I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil in a cake mix recipe?
You can, but I think it tastes nastay! I think butter would be waayyy better!
Don't. Unless you want your dessert to taste like olives. Olive oil is too strong a flavour to be used in baking. If you don't have veg oil, sub melted butter or margarine instead.
if you do you must be tasteless
    sure, olives are a vegetable.
Olive oil is very healthy, but very strong in flavor. So, unless you want your cake to taste like olives, stick to regular vegetable oil.
No, I wouldn't. They have two different uses. You can, however, substitute the same amount of applesauce. Many people do this now to lower the fat in cake recipes. You can't tell the difference.
If it's a very light extra virgin, I've heard of people doing it. It's not my favorite way.
Yes, just make sure it's not extra-virgin olive oil as that leaves a strong taste.

Any type of cooking oil you have will do, or use some butter or margarine. What is a good substitute for vegetable oil?
Would not use olive oil, the smoke point is too low. Grapeseed, or canola would work well.

Also, make sure that you never wash cast iron with soap. You should rinse with only water and scrub lightly with sponge. This will maintain the seasoning in the pan. I have had mine for 6 years and don't even need to apply the oil after rinsing.
Any type of oil you have including olive oil, canola oil or even a thin coat of shortening or butter or margarine will do the same thing.
Olive oil is great for healthy cooking but for baking a sweet confections, use canola oil melted butter or any other oil.

NO! olive oil has strong taste I wouldn't recommend it , i am expert in cooking and I know what I am talking about, olive oil for example is best if eaten raw with French bred . Good luck.
yes, it really doesn't matter what oil you use......the only that will be different is the nutritional information.....olive oil is much better for you anyway
yep - do it all the time %26amp; everything turns out FINE!

Just make sure it is plain %26amp; not a flavored oil!

    GOOD LUCK
    NO
Olive oil has a very strong flavor. I wouldn't do it. Plus, the olive oil costs about two or three times as much anyway.
only if you use EXTRA LIGHT virgin...otherwise olive oil's distinctive taste would not work well in baked sweets
Olive oil can have a strong and distinct taste of olives, which usually doesn't go well with chocolate. You could pull this off if you perhaps have an extra-light tasting olive oil, which should be clear and light yellow.

Most olive oil, however won't work very well. Most margarine is made of corn oil, and would be a much better substitute. I would definitely use butter or ez-spread over any strong, dark olive oil.
Yes, as long as it's not flavored.
you could use extra light or the light one i wouldn't use the extra virgin olive oil because it would be too heavy
No - it will change the flavor....I would use canola oil or crisco before I would use olive oil.
Yeah but I wouldn't try it.
yes you can itll be the same just be sure to follow the recipe
Sure! Just use the '; Extra Light'; olive oil. I use it in everything.
    sure!

absolutely! I only use olive oil in my cooking, it's all i have. it doesn't change the taste at all, i use extra virgin. i've made brownies this way for at least 3 years and everyone loves them, you cannot tell the difference!
    NO NO NO!!!
you can-it won't taste the same. use safflower or canola oil if you are looking for something healthier
I did and the brownies didn't taste any different. Happy baking!
The brownies might taste like vegetables tho...
you could, but shouldn't. The olive oil has a very strong taste which will over power the taste of the brownies. You are better off using butter if you don't have veg. oil.
yes, it will be very good, thats all we use

just wondering the idea just popped up in my head..What would happen if u put vegetable oil in the refrigerator?
It would get a little cloudy and thicken a bit. It needn't be stored there, just in a cool place like a cabinet. Think of what happens to butter--it hardens in the fridge but melts outside of it.What would happen if u put vegetable oil in the refrigerator?
    it would get colder.

otherwise, the same. Vegetable oil won't even solidify in the fridge
It doesn't hurt it-- there's just no sense in doing it. It coagulates.
I keep my used olive oil in the 'fridge as it lasts longer w/o oxidizing.

Where can I buy FULLY hydrogenated vegetable oil?

I know that typically, a softer textured shortening is desirable for baking. Crisco creates this with a hard, fully hydrogenated oil blended with a non-hydrogenated one, while cheaper brands sometimes create the soft texture with partial hydrogenation. Is Vegetable oil and Olive oil good for your body?

Or is 1 good and 1 is bad or are they both good or bad?

What are the healthiest oil's in someones diet?

What is Canola Oil?Is Vegetable oil and Olive oil good for your body?
Most of the time VO contains hydrogenated fats when you purchase anything labeled with VO. Be very wise when purchasing food products with VO. It's just another name the companies use to fool us consumers into thinking there is actually something good in the product. Don't be fooled.

The best oil to buy is Olive oil. Also avocado oil. Both high in monounsaturated fats which are very good for you.

Canola oil, like a lot of the ';vegetable oils';, have been genetically modified which is why you can't find any in the UK. There is plenty of Canola Oil on American shelves in most grocery stores, but not here. The UK is very strict what comes into the country.

Genetically modified foods are derived from plants which is why most of the oils can be harmful if not chosen wisely. Here are some to steer clear of: soybean, canola, corn and cottonseed oils.Is Vegetable oil and Olive oil good for your body?
    not really... clogs pores............
Olive oil has less polyunsaturated fats. You can cook with it too, just watch that you don't cook on too high a heat.
Olive oil is always the best because it doesn't have cholesterol. Too much oil, as anything else which is too much, is not good, unless you live in a freezing country.

Canola oil is the oil extracted from a grain called canola and is low cholesterol, and thus, healthier than other grain oils.
Both of these oils are better for you than saturated fat and I believe olive oil is better than other veg. oils but in small amounts of course. Canola oil is made from canola seeds and is a vegetable oil. Olive oil is probably the healthiest.
Canola oil and Sunflower oil is best for you, because it has zero trans fat. Believe it or not, vegetable oil is more fattening than anything else. And if you're going to use olive oil, you need to buy the most expensive brands or else you're just getting leftovers.
Olive Oil is the best for health.
Olive oil has good properties as does canola oil.
yes. The only oil thats not good 4 u is the grease from fried foods.
canola oil or rapeseed oil.. is an adaption of the two words canadian %26amp; oil.

no one liked the name rape in a food product..

that and olive oil are mostly beneficial oils.

vegetable oil is usually soy or a combination and has more negatives than the two above.

there's poly mono and saturated and unsaturated and trans fats to consider .

then there is omega 6 and 3

    and it can get complex.

good fish oils, flaxseed, others too.

I'm now told by MD canola is better for me than olive with cholesterol heart issues getting old etc.

.also note a test was done that olive pomace oil (less flavor used fro frying is safer than canola as cooks in the USA tend to fry too hot .

over 350 produces the same chemical in cigarettes that causes lung cancer. others produce it at lower heats,,

i cant find the really good older reference from prevention magazine healing food cookbook (in most libraries) and good foods cook book (another author), but they are both a good read.

for basic, but incomplete, oil info compliments of the feds...

    http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/chd/Tipsheets/t鈥?/a>
I heard that Olive oil is good 4 u, but I really dont know about vegetable oil or Canola oil.

I have no idea what that is?
Olive oil doesn't clog your arteries, other oils do.
All vegetable oils are OK... some better than others.

Here are the differences among these healthy fats as well as the best food sources for each type:

Monounsaturated fat remains liquid at room temperature but may start to solidify in the refrigerator. Foods high in monounsaturated fat include olive, peanut and canola oils. Avocados and most nuts also have high amounts of monounsaturated fat.

Polyunsaturated fat is usually liquid at room temperature and in the refrigerator. Foods high in polyunsaturated fats include vegetable oils, such as safflower, corn, sunflower, soy and cottonseed oils.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats found mostly in seafood. Good sources of omega 3s include fatty, cold-water fish, such as salmon, mackerel and herring. Flax seeds, flax oil and walnuts also contain omega-3 fatty acids, and small amounts are found in soybean and canola oils.
Olive oil is better. Your body can digest it better than the other oils.

Of course it can, olive oil is better for you anyway. Olive oil is just usually more expensive that's all. Most things that are better for you tend to be anyway.I want to make homemade french fried. Can olive oil be a substitute for vegetable oil?
NAN is correct. Olive oil is not for cooking with heat that high.
i am generally against making french fries at home--it's too much to do at home to get it right, unless you have a deep fryer.

olive oil does not work well for french fries--it has a low smoke point, especially if you are using extra virgin--it also add a funky, green-grassy taste. and, it's a waste of good olive oil. peanut, grapeseed or canola are best for french fries.

I would toss the potatoes with the olive oil--be sure to cut uniform, even sized--and bake in a 375 F oven on oiled cookie sheet on the middle rack. check after 20 minutes, and flip to brown other side to crisp even more.
You don't have to fry your fries, baking them is actually healthier.

    Baked Homemade French Fries

    4 medium Russet Potatoes

    1 Egg White

    Vegetable Cooking Spray

    All purpose seasoning salt

Cut potatoes into large wedges. Place in ziplock bag with egg white. Seal bag and shake until potatoes are covered with the egg white. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray. Place potatoes on the cookie sheet in a single layer. Spray a couple of layers of the cooking spray on the potatoes. Sprinkle on the seasoning salt.

Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, turning once after 25 minutes. Potatoes are done when they are fork tender.

    I hope this was helpful,Take Care!!! :)
I read that olive oil should not really be used for high heat cooking.

Why would you want to use something so expensive for french fries. You could also use shortening instead.

Get the cheapest oil, you have to use a lot.

Better yet, just go to a restraunt and have some.
Olive oil has a much lower smoke point, and is not good for frying. Your french fries will be nasty. Try pre-cooking the potatoes-bake for 30 minutes at 350 in the oven, and then cut them into quarters or smaller-mix with olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and return to oven and bake until browned 30 minutes or more.
    Yes and No.

Yes, if you intend on tossing your thicker potato wedges and baking them in the oven. Suprisingly this can make for a tasty french fry. I know when I do it like this, you can season with garlic, italian, parmesan, paprika, cajun or any other spice that comes to mind.

No, if you are pan frying or using a fry-daddy with traditional thin cut fries. Olive oil can not take high heat for very long and vegetable oil is best. If that is still too oily and you are trying to be more health conscious, always towel off the oil. Some people use a brown paper bag, but a thick towel is best. Keep one in your pantry and rinse in your sink before doing it in a general wash -- along with your cooking cloths.
I don't see why not. It is oil and is used to cook with it. And just for health reasons sometimes it tastes better when you use less oil because it wont be so greasy and you can taste the potato better.

    Good luck =)
You can use it but it will not take the high heat required, so the fries will absorb a lot of oil.

Need help fast...can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil when making muffins from muffin mix?

would not be a good idea the muffins would taste like olive oil... you can substitute butter.. but if you have spread or margarine it would be better just melt it in microwave dish until you have the same amount that the recipe calls for ... hope this helps.... ohhh yeah spread works better because it contains more vegetable oil than margarine :)Need help fast...can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil when making muffins from muffin mix?
You can use olive oil, EEVO, or other. It will change the flavor, however. If you are planning to use butter or margarine, melt it so you have a liquid measure. It will also change the flavor a bit, I prefer it.

If you are making fruit flavored muffins and will be using EEVO, add some lemon zest, if it is available. It will bring our the fruity flavors without overpowering them and cover up the flavor change of the EEVO.

If you are going to use real butter, the best type to use in baking is sweet butter, that is the unsalted kind, but either can be used.

Enjoy your muffins!Need help fast...can I substitute olive oil for vegetable oil when making muffins from muffin mix?
    Hi

It all depends on the oil/brand. All olive oils are not the same.

If it is a lite olive oil it should be alright.. If the olive oil you have isn't to strong smelling or tasting it you shouldn't have a problem.

Some olive oils have a very strong taste. I wouldn't use them.

    Good luck.
You should never use olive oil in any cake recipes. Do you have any Crisco that you could melt? You can also use melted butter with the same measurements called for if you were to use the oil. Good Luck
NO!!! do not do it it will not taste the same olive oil is meant for cooking in a pan not for baking olive oil is better for you but do not put it in your muffin mix
NO, NO, NO, NEVER, NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

    THE RESULT WILL TASTE VILE!!!

If you don't have cooking oil, substitute butter or margarine, not olive oil.

    Doc
For the small amount you'll use, the difference in viscosity and taste should result in little difference.
Yes... it's healthier... you can even add equal parts of olive oil and apple sause for a healthier alternative
i have done it---i have also used peanut oil-----
as long as it's not e.v.o.o. (xtra virgin) that could make your muffins taste funny. not necisarily, but it COULD.
it will make them heavier like a muffin...use applesauce or any fruit pureed. even pumpkin will work.
I'm not sure, but i think its would be fine if you tried it.
    yes, better for you.

What is the best solution to use to get vegetable oil out of my carpet?

My daughter spilled a whol ebottle of vegetable oil in small puddles all over my living room rug! I doubt that standard carpet shampoo will cut through all that grease...I have a shampooer...Can someone recommend to me a detergent to use? What is the best solution to use to get vegetable oil out of my carpet?
Dawn dishwashing detergent is one possibility because it dissolves grease and oil so well. Another option is the carpet cleaner Resolve. I have used both and prefer the Resolve. Just spray it on, let it set a few minutes and vacuum. Resolve has no color to it while Dawn has blue dye.

Wishing you the best in 2006!What is the best solution to use to get vegetable oil out of my carpet?
You can try baby powder or powdered detergent.

It will soak up the oils.
DAWN dishsoap. is best because. be careful of carpet cleaning products that may contain even more oils.

How do I convert my diesel truck to burn vegetable oil?

There are probably a lot of people thinking about this right now and maybe soon no source of grease because all the burger joints have sold theirs. Maybe there are some groups studying this. How do I convert my diesel truck to burn vegetable oil?
It's not a question of converting your diesel engine to burn vegetable oil, but of coverting the vegetable oil so that it can be used in in your engine.

Many vegetable oils have similar fuel properties to diesel fuel, except for higher viscosity and lower oxidative stability. If these differences can be overcome, vegetable oil may substitute for #2 Diesel fuel, most significantly as engine fuel or home heating oil.

For engines designed to burn #2 diesel fuel, the viscosity of vegetable oil must be lowered to allow for proper atomization of fuel, otherwise incomplete combustion and carbon build up will ultimately damage the engine. Many enthusiasts refer to vegetable oil used as fuel as waste vegetable oil (WVO) if it is oil that was discarded from a restaurant or straight vegetable oil (SVO) or pure plant oil (PPO) to distinguish it from biodiesel.

See Wikipedia and other sources to see what is involved. How do I convert my diesel truck to burn vegetable oil?
You can get some equipment and refine the oil and any diesel engine will run on it if it's seals are compatible.

I use olive oil all the time! Try putting the fries and oil in a ziplock bag with italion seasonings or lawry's salt or whatever you like. Shake it up the put on a baking sheet for healthy, good tasting seasoned fries!I want to make homemade french fries. Can olive oil be a substitute for vegetable oil?
You can do it. I think Olive oil is a bit to bold tasting for this.

Is it Extra virgin or is a lighter kind. If it is a lighter kind, it might be OK. If it is extra virgin, I wouldn;t do it.
No. In order to fry the french fries, you'll need to get the oil much hotter than olive oil can withstand without burning or smoking too much. You need to use a very clear oil like vegetable oil or canola oil.
Olive oil turns to poison when cooked. NEVER

Olive oil is to be consumed raw

Use sunflower oil for french fries. Its is a blessing

If you ran out of it, don't make fries
Yes olive oil will be just as good if not better (since its healthier)!

    %26lt;3
Sure, but I would make baked fries instead. They will be healthier and crispier. Just lay the fries on a baking sheet and drissle with olive oil. Bake in the oven :)
If you are cooking them in the oven, yes. Just toss them in the oil and season. If you care deep frying, no. Olive oil doesn't do well in extreme heat.
    definintely.

It actually makes the fries more crispier and healthier.
Yeah, they should taste fine since olive oil goes well with potatoes (in my opinion) but the flavor will probably be REALLY strong.
Whoa! WAY to heavy and too low a smoke point for deep frying. You could however brush them with olive oil and grill them. The best thing for fries is peanut oil. That's the ';boardwalk'; style fries secret.
No don't. Olive oil has a much lower burning point than veg oil. You can't use olive oil to fry items. If all you have is olive oil, then thick-cut the potatoes- place on cookie sheet (use a foil layer too if you want)- then generously pour olive oil over it and add salt, pepper, and/or garlic powder. Crushed rosemary leaves is another good herb. Put in 375 oven for 40-50 mins. It won't be like french fries- but it's a good side dish. If you want fries like McDonalds- you definitely need veg oil.
You can not get your fries as crispy with olive oil because it burns before it is hot enough. If you don't mind that then, yes, it will cook them just fine. Just not as brown and crispy.

    Bert
Pure Virgin Olive oil burns when heated too high.

Ordinary olive oil should be okay. Don't forget,it will have a taste to it
Try frying them in butter. Really good.
Yes! it is the finest of all the vegitable oils! you could also

    try oven chips!
Olive Oil will Make your french fries Limp and gross tasting. Ive tried it. You can use Canola, Vegitable, or sunflower Oil.
I only use extra virgin olive oil, even for french fries. It doesn't heat up as quickly, but you will enjoy the same taste with added health benefits.
Yes! I use it....And season the fries.....Can I come over? Not really....But it is sssooooo good!
no, it doesn't have a high enough smoke point, it will burn. peanut oil is the best, but can be expensive. use canola or vegetable.
Yes. as long as you have the heat at the right temp it should work out fine.

  • Are there any dessert recipes that do not require vegetable oil?

If so, can you suggest some tasty ones? Are there any dessert recipes that do not require vegetable oil?
Yes. Just replace the ingredients. Replace vegetable oil with cream or butter. My grandma used to replace vegetable oil with cream, because cream gives the cake/dessert a creamier taste.

Slush doesn't need vegetable oil. Just mix some juice with ice and throw everything into a mixer.

And this one is my favourite:

Dice some apples. Add some cinnamon and sugar.

Store it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Enjoy!

One of the best recepies without vegetable oil is(In my opinion) pannacotta. It's a jelly made out of cream. Belive me, it's delicious. Are there any dessert recipes that do not require vegetable oil?
I麓ve just recently discovered some yummy recipes sooo easy..

take a banana or two (or 3) slice down the side and open a bit

to allow air in, then lay it back down... put bananas on a tray

and place in a hot oven... cook about 7-10 min, until banana is

hot- the peel will be all black, take out open up the peel, you can

slice or dice and eat... it is really yummy.. you can also sprinkle

    cinnamon and sugar on it..

also you can do this with fresh pinapple slices.. just lay

the pineapple slices on a tray, heat in oven take out and eat..

and you can sprinkle cinnamon and sugar..

    healthy and yummy
If you are baking a cake and it calls for oil, you may substitute apple sauce. I have done this many times and it works fine. The oil is used for moistness.
you can make lots of stuff without vegetable oil

for example boxed cake mix.. calls for veg oil.. but you can substitute

use applesauce instead .. i do it all the time
you could make nearly any kind of cookie or candy but if your saying vegtable as in butter margerine oil etc then try to make candy because they call for little to none some good examples are marshmellos most nougets apricot squares
How about ready-to-bake cookies? You can find these at H-E-B for cheap. You can also try Wal-Mart.
Stupid question... There's no vegetable oil in ice cream!
Ice with sugar on it. Crushed ice cream with chicken in it. Corn on the lawnmower.
i don't think any require vegetable oil

What kind of vegetables is vegetable oil made of?

Canola, mazola, olive, and soybean oil clearly state what kind of vegetable is used, but not vegetable oil. Is it a mix or what? What kind of vegetables is vegetable oil made of?
it is made from several different kinds of plants - corn, palm, olive, peanut, etc. I would assume most of the vegetable oil in the united states is mostly made up of corn oil. What kind of vegetables is vegetable oil made of?
    usually the ones without family
    Palm oil is popular sadly.

I watched a documentary on the plight of orangutangs in Borneo and they are being killed when their habitat is destroyed so palm trees can be planted as they grow quickly and are sold easily.

Sadly, vegetable oils don't always say they contain palm oil.

A better option is olive oil, which is healthier anyway.
    OMG - That's funny, I had a friend calling seriously frantic because she served her kids something with veggie oil and couldn't tell what it's made from. She's super psycho about everything and was all ';I've never heard of an oily carrot!';

Anyway, vegetable oil refers to oils extracted from numerous sources - corn, soybeans, peanuts, cottonseeds, safflower seeds, rape seeds (for canola oil) and sunflower seeds. It's a potpourri kind of oil, like the everything bagel at Einstein's where they sweep all the leftover stuff into a vat and make an extra profit off of it.
    Usually corn.

How much butter to replace vegetable oil?

Ready to make a cake mix cake and I don't have any vegetable oil (or any oil). It calls for 1/3 cup of oil, how much butter to I use to replace that? How much butter to replace vegetable oil?
Equal, 1/3 cup of oil = 1/3 cup of butter. 1 stick of butter is 1/2 cup, but the paper around the butter cube should indicate how much 1/3 cup is. Happy eating! How much butter to replace vegetable oil?
I would not substitute butter for vegetable oil equally because oil is 100% fat and butter is about 80% fat and 20% water. I would add a little extra butter. BUT......if you wish to do it equally, 1/3 cup is 2.66 ounces. A tablespoon equals a half ounce. So you will need a doink over 5 tablespoons of butter.

    Chef Mark
it would work out to be about 2 table spoons
    use a half a stick
Equal amount which is 3 and 1/3 TBS. butter.

Make sure you melt it and it is room temp when adding. Enjoy!
you need to make clarified butter in the process you will lose approximatley 25% of the butter you started with

So you need 1/3 c of veg oil or 5.33 or @ 2 TBS per oz you will need 10 TBS +1 tsp

to make clarified melt 2 sticks of butter

allow to boil slowly when the boiling stops and the milk solids sink to the bottom you're done

Do Not Allow to Burn !!!

Using a ladle skim off the clarified butter.
    2 tablespoons
    1/3 cup of melted butter

Applesauce can be used as a substitute for oil in most quick-bread recipes and the like. My mother uses applesauce instead of oil in her Zucchini Nut Bread, and it's very good, though not as rich.

I just saw the additional posting. You could probably use butter.
    Applesauce.
there is an oil substitute called Wonderslim that is made from prunes. it works well and is fat free, and tastes better than you might think.

    added later ------------

Alright people, quit giving me a thumbs down. Maybe you don't like Wonderslim, but it is an honest answer to the question posted, and unlike some of the other people who clearly didn't read that she didn't want applesauce, I actually read the whole question. It's a good answer to the question, so go somewhere else with your thumbs.
    Apple sauce
Melting 1 stick of butter/margarine in the microwave will yield a half cup of oil.

Can peanut oil be substituted for vegetable oil when baking a cake?

I'm all out of vegetable oil but have tons of peanut oil. Would it work if I used the peanut oil? If not, what else could I use? It's a Betty Crocker cake. Can peanut oil be substituted for vegetable oil when baking a cake?
Yes. Peanut oil is quite neutral in flavour and pretty much all vegetable oils have the same consistency for baking, i.e. they have the same no. of calories, same consistency and same properties, other than flavour. Just remember to warn people that there's peanut in the cake, to avoid harming people with nut allergies. Can peanut oil be substituted for vegetable oil when baking a cake?
should be fine, might add an extra flavor to the cake. can counter act that by adding an extract with the wet ingredients. And if you have peanut oil around, i assume no one at home has a peanut allergy, if you are taking the cake somewhere, it might need to be mentioned just incase of a nut allergy.
As long as it is not a cold pressed peanut oil it would work fine. If it was a cold pressed oil you would be adding a great deal of peanut flavor, which might not work well with the rest of the flavors.
    YES. IT IS VERY GOOD.
    it will work fine.
    it works

If you're really worried, knock on a neighbor's door. Someone's got vegetable oil on hand and won't mind giving you some.
Butter would work best, however, olive oil would not work; it would make it taste too olivey.
Don't use anything in the batter. You will have to rub a little margarine on the surface that you use to cook the pancakes after every batch. The oil in the pancake batter would make it so you don't have to grease the pan. To ensure moisture content in the batter, use buttermilk or milk in place of the oil. I have a recipe for pancake batter that doesn't use oil. You have to separate the eggs and beat the whites to make VERY Fluffy pancakes. If you are interested, just email me for the recipe. (I got it from my Grandmother.)
you can use the olive oil if its light colored. If you use dark colored olive oil it might change the flavor. Are you using box pancake mix? If so you can just leave out the oil they will cook the same.

    Use the butter then!!
go with something thats light like vegie oil. olive oil is light. is it extra virgin light? extra virgin will do just fine 2. butter is a bit heavy. lol and cooking spray is a waste of time.
Instead of oil (p.e. 3 tablespoons) you can use shortening or butter (4 tablespoons)
    use the olive oil

Is there a substitute for vegetable oil, when making brownies?

Other than any other oil.Is there a substitute for vegetable oil, when making brownies?
I use real butter. Is there a substitute for vegetable oil, when making brownies?
The same. Sorry, I meant ';the';. Report Abuse

    Applesauce is a good substitute.
try Flax seed as a substitute.

Any good Pie crust recipes using butter or vegetable oil instead of shortening?

I just picked a bushel of apples and want to make some pies but I just realized I'm out of solid (Crisco) shortening. Does anyone have any tried %26amp; delicious pie crust recipes using real butter or canola oil?Any good Pie crust recipes using butter or vegetable oil instead of shortening?
You can substitute exact measurements of butter for other fats, but remeber if it is table butter it already has salt added to it. You can also make a crust with oil, but it is much harder to get a flaky crust with oil.Any good Pie crust recipes using butter or vegetable oil instead of shortening?
    1/2 cup cream cheese

How do I know when to use olive oil and when to use vegetable oil?

I have just begun cooking with olive oil and sometimes grapeseed oil. Is there a trick to know when to use vegetable oil instead? I mainly mean when pan frying or sauteing meats and vegetables, but am interested in all ideas. Thanks. How do I know when to use olive oil and when to use vegetable oil?
The only two time I would use vegetable oil rather than olive oil would be for high temperature cooking (deep frying, for example) or when the flavor of olive oil might be objectionable such as baking.

BertHow do I know when to use olive oil and when to use vegetable oil?
A good rule of thumb: If you want to add flavor, add olive oil. If you want it to be a shortning-like agent, go with the veggie oil.
Virgin Olive oil, use it for salads, mayonnaise, dressings.Oil without the Virgin, use it for cooking.
for cooking, i use olive. for baking, i use veg.

i read somewhere that olive oil is healthier and it makes vegetables taste better
I use oil oil for everything.
For all Italian food, salad dressings, or garnishes, use olive.

For other cooking or baking, use veg. oil.
I use olive oil for everything except baking. I will use vegetable oil for any baking recipe that requires oil.
Vegteable oil is so bad for you!!

The oils that you should cook with are:

    sesame

    extra virgin coconut oil

Olive oil, sunflower, and flax oil are others that are good and should only be eaten raw.
Olive oil imparts a distinct flavor on your food. It's great with all Italian foods and veggies. Olive oil has a different burning point than vegetable oil. If you're actually frying- oil at a depth of 1/2'; or more- you need to use vegetable oil because the olive oil will smoke and burn. I would use only veg oil with beef and chicken unless it was for an Italian dish. For beef, you only need a scant amount of oil.
I am not completely sure but my brother in law ONLY uses olive oil, it is healther.
Really depends on your palate. Olive oil is thicker and has an earthier taste, while vegetable oil is thinner and leaves a corn type taste (as it is mostly corn/canola oil in the mix).

Olive oil works very well with herbs and rubs, and searing of meat, while vegetable oil is very good for stir fry. Mainly I associate olive oil with salty and vegetable oil with sweet...unless it's a deep fried item.

My rule is olive oil for taste, vegetable oil if I don't want it to stick...

If you are substituting olive oil for vegetable oil divide the recipe amount called for in half because olive oil has a stronger taste and can overwhelm flavour and make food fall unpleasantly heavy in the stomach if used in the same quantities as vegetable oil.

Ex. Recipe for foccacia bread calls for 1/2 cup of vegetable oil...use 1/4 cup of olive oil instead...

    hope that helps

    *cheers*
When you heat vegetable oil, it produces trans fats, which are very bad for you, so I would only use vegetable oil for salad dressings and stuff like that, where you don't have to heat it up.

Olive oil and grapeseed oil don't do that, and although butter has been regarded as bad for you for a long time, it doesn't either, so is better for baking than other fats. Besides which, it tastes nicer.
well it has (to me) a dirt taste or an odor like wet rags

that is olive oil to me.

    Of course food covers it

it is over priced on top of it all.

all the other oils are produced in similar fashion

can cook at higher temps without smoking and polluting the walls and ceiling with that film.

    keep olive oil on salads.
Generally I use olive oil to marinate, for salads, basically things I won't cook. Veg oil for frying and things. Some people cook with olive oil but it really isn't good by me to fry in. It more for eating as it. To put on top of pasta for an extra kick things like that. To dip crusty bread in mixed with red pepper flakes and balsamic vinegar. Hope this is helpful.
Use Olive oil for most of your cooking. Use Vege oil when frying with very high heat or deep frying, olive oil burns too easily.
