Any really good sites on info about cars running on vegetable oil?

I have a project about greener technology and i need to answer the following question

Who, what, where, when, why. and how

and is there a specific company doing this?

Any info or sites given would be appreciated thanks!Any really good sites on info about cars running on vegetable oil?
Do a search on biofuel, or biodiesel A lot of the big semi trucks run on it.Any really good sites on info about cars running on vegetable oil?
I don't know about specifics, but I found this article on ehow.com on how to convert your diesel auto to run on vegetable oil. It can't be a gasoline auto, it has to be a diesel engine

Can I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil to fry doughnuts?

All I have is extra light olive oil and I want to know if it will work with the same results as vegetable oil.Can I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil to fry doughnuts?
no, to get the oil hot enough to cook the donuts it would burn..olive oil is a low temp oil, Sorry. Can I use olive oil instead of vegetable oil to fry doughnuts?
No you will burn the oil. Olive oil burns easy at high temps. ITs not a frying oil.
Nope - Sorry.
the taste will be awful anyway.....

smoking point is way to low...use lard or something neutral flavored with a high smoking point.

Can I use Olive oil instead of Vegetable oil in my Chilli recipie?

I wonder,

And what spices are in a chilli seasoning mix?Can I use Olive oil instead of Vegetable oil in my Chilli recipie?
Yes you can even use bacon grease if you have any, though it'll be worse for your arteries than using olive/canola oil would.

If you want to go nineteenth-century style on the cooking fat for your homemade chili, you can use lard.

A skillet is a pan with low, straight sides and yes, you most definitely CAN use a pot for chili making. In fact using a pot is the recommended method for making chili.

The spices used in the mix vary from brand to brand but they generally use some type of dried chile, salt, pepper and a couple other spices. Use several different brands to find a flavor you like or use actual powdered chiles, like powdered anchos, along with other spices you like for the flavor. Can I use Olive oil instead of Vegetable oil in my Chilli recipie?
You're welcome. Although I said I've had three years experience making chili, that only counts the time I;'e been living by myself since my mom died. befpre she died, Mom used to help me make the chili by doing all the prep work, including cutting the veggies up. Report Abuse

Yes you can use sunflower oil instead of olive oil.

Chilli flakes, red wine, salt and pepper, red kidney beans, onion, garlic, tinned tomatoes and tomato puree.

a skillet is a saute pan but you can use an ordinary saucepan with no problem
Of course you can use olive oil. (or any oil, as long as it is 'vegetable', such as corn oil, or sunflower oil, or peanut oil)
Grapeseed oil has the least taste of all oils I've ever tried, and is very heart-friendly if those are concerns.
Sure! I season my chili with chili powder, garlic, cayenne pepper, black pepper, comino (cumin), and some guinness.
Sunflower oil is fine. Olive oil will give it a sweet taste - some people prefer it.
Yes u can use olive oil but good quality is way more expensive then other oils.

Can you substitute olive oil for vegetable oil when baking?

I was wondering if you could bake with olive oil instead of vegetable oil. Since it's thicker, will it make the cookies, cake, etc. taste different? Can you substitute olive oil for vegetable oil when baking?
Substituting olive oil for butter in baked goods allows a smaller quantity to be used; in most cases up to 25% less fat is used when baking with olive oil. Light olive oil is ideal for baked goods because of its subtle flavor. Many people do not associate olive oil with baking, but it is one of the best oils that can be used for this purpose. Olive oil has been a favorite of bread bakers for centuries, because it results in bread with excellent flavor and texture. In Mediterranean countries, olive oil is used not only in bread making, but in other types of baked goods as well, including sweet items. In the United States, olive oil is used less often for baking, except in bread making. Many consumers in the U.S. are worried about baked items having a strong olive taste, however when light olive oil is used, it is difficult to detect an olive flavor in baked goods. Light olive oil is perfect for baking cakes, sweetly flavored breads, or rolls.

Using olive oil instead of butter in baking allows some of the fat required for a recipe to be eliminated. About 25% less olive oil is required for most baked items. The use of olive oil instead of butter also eliminates much of the saturated fat and cholesterol contained in many dessert cakes and rolls, making them healthier and more nutritious. The natural antioxidants (such as vitamin E) in olive oil help to keep baked items fresher for a longer period compared to items baked with butter.

Use the chart below to convert the quantity of butter

called for in a recipe to the required quantity of olive oil.

If you use olive oil it will overpower the taste of your baked goods. Vegetable oil is neutral in flavor whereas olive oil is not and is usually strongly flavored. Don't use olive oil in baking unless you want it to taste of olives.
The taste will be a little different but not so much so to take away the goodness of the cookies, go for it!
sure i've done it many times
The taste would be too different. For example, if you were to take a piece of bread and dip into each oil, you can tase the difference. I wouldn't recommend substituting.
i think it would taste very different, a lot more bold taste than you would want in baked goods.
Olive oil has a rather strong flavor compared to the ';crisco'; type vegetable oils but it is still vegetable oil. It will work but you might not like the added flavor, especially in cakes and cookies.

B
Unless its a light olive oil, the flavor is way too strong for cookies, its usually better for meat and vegetables.
When I used it for baking biscuits they came out very hard instead of soft, and with an odd flavor. It was a fairly light olive oil.

I've never tried it for cookies.
I have used it before and it tastes fine to me... but you can try it yourself on a small batch to see if you want to use it in the future. If you're greasing the pan with it, it tastes better to use butter.

  • Is it alright if a recipe calls for vegetable oil but I use olive oil instead? Will there be a difference?

Is it alright if a recipe calls for vegetable oil but I use olive oil instead? Will there be a difference? Is it alright if a recipe calls for vegetable oil but I use olive oil instead? Will there be a difference?
Definitely use the olive oil for the pasta dish. Unless you are deep frying or using it in a baking recipe always use olive oil.

You can fry and saute with olive oil also.

There are two grades of olive oil. Light and extra virgin. The difference is taste, color and smoking point. Extra virgin is best used in salad dressings, pasta and vegetable topping, sauteing and any recipe that doesn't require high temperature cooking. You can fry with light olive oil. Leave the recipe to it's original ingredients when baking and deep frying.

You'll find more flavor and less cholesterol when using olive oil in your cooking. Is it alright if a recipe calls for vegetable oil but I use olive oil instead? Will there be a difference?
you can use olive oil, however it has a stronger flavor and is a bit heavier. if it's for baking, i generally use veg or corn oil...however for cooking I tend to use olive oil.
you can use olive oil wherever you use vegetable oil however, extra virgin olive oil is a heavier oil and should be used as a salad dressing and as a topping to accent a dish, not really for cooking. regular olive oil is for cooking and I use it almost daily instead of vegetable oil.
Yes, there will be, so you should always go with the recommended oil in a recipe. Olive oil is heavier and more flavorful. Vegetable oil is lighter and more mellow in flavor, and better suited to use in light salad dressings, or Asian stir-fries.
there is also the smoke index. vegetable oil is more used as a frying base. olive oil is more used for flavoring.
a pasta dish should be ok, however know that olive oil burns quicker than vegetable oil and has a nutty flavor that veg or canola oil doesnt offer. Some oils are for flavor others are not.
It depends on what you use it for. Don't put it in a cake, but if you are say, frying chicken, it won't really make a difference.
If you like the flavor of olive oil, then by all means use it. It will change the flavor slightly, but it will probably improve the flavor of a pasta dish over vegetable oil.
It will be healthier and probably taste better.
If you absolutely must use the olive oil vs. the vegetable oil, then it will make a difference, but not a major one. For stir-frys, and the like it will be ok, but for desserts like cake and cookies, try not to use it. Another thing- if you ever need to make a fruit compote, or fruit sauce, try adding a tablespoon of vinegar. It brings out the sweet flavor, just like salt. Good luck and happy cooking!
YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE-----USE VEG. OIL

Do you add vegetable oil to canned soup while heating it on the stove?

Last time I heated canned soup (yes, I am that lazy) it tasted a little burnt. Even when I turned the heat on low, it still had a peculiar taste. Should I add a little bit- say, a tablespoon of vegetable oil to the chicken noodle soup I'm making?Do you add vegetable oil to canned soup while heating it on the stove?
be sure you are stirring it as it heats, or it will burn on the bottom. If it's burning on the bottom and you stir it afterward, all that stuff will get into your soup. I wouldn't add oil to it, I don't see what good that would do. Try heating it in the microwave if your still having problems. That's how I always do it.Do you add vegetable oil to canned soup while heating it on the stove?
that might just be the brand of soup your buying (their recipe). you normally add some water to canned soup, if you like a lighter flavor. i put a little butter in mine too.
No. It won't help the taste.
Why would you add oil? What would that do for it?

Do NOT add oil it will just sit on the surface.
no, just heat it up slowly instead of quickly and it will taste fine

Can i use vegetable oil as a coolant for my homemade water cooling system?

i made my homemade watercooling system but the probs is what liquid should i use as a coolant..i dont have money to buy a xpensive coolant..so i made a reserch..they say's can be a water or a vegetable oil..what do you think? Can i use vegetable oil as a coolant for my homemade water cooling system?
I would use distilled water. It is not a matter of cooling capacity in my mind. I don't know if oil or water carries heat better. If there is a leak distilled water does not carry electricity so nothing will short out. There would also be nothing to clean up. Try cleaning up oil after a leak. You can get cheap distilled water in a supermarket for steam irons. Can i use vegetable oil as a coolant for my homemade water cooling system?

When making brownies from a mix, can you substitute apple sauce for the vegetable oil?

you sure canWhen making brownies from a mix, can you substitute apple sauce for the vegetable oil?
Yes and it works well also non fat liquid butter can be used.
you can and it will be healthier, but your brownies will not be as moist or as good.
yes, you can use canned pumpkin too.. I think they will be more cake-like than fudge-like though..
Geeezzzz, it's so easy to make them from scratch why would make them from a box. The box mix has all kinds of crap in it and you are worried about oil vs. vege oil?
Yes, you can use unsweetened applesauce or prune puree in place of the oil.
Yes you can and it comes out very good, use same amount of applesauce as you would Oil.

If I pour vegetable oil in my yard what will happen?

Yeah I need the guys who use the vegetable oil to stop by my house.

I have a lot of used oil cause I use a fryer. If I dig a little shallow hole and put the oil in the hole what will happen? Will it just degrade after awhile? If I pour vegetable oil in my yard what will happen?
Vegetable oil is not harmful to the earth and yes, it will deteriate. But used/burnt oil is carboned %26amp; not good. Where ever it was dumped, even weeds won't grow there for a year (longer, depending on the amount dumped). It is best to pour into a coffee can with kitty litter to 'thicken' %26amp; have it disposed rest of household garbage. If I pour vegetable oil in my yard what will happen?
Yes it will degrade, but you can sell it to someone who can use it to make bio-diesel. At least you'll recover some of the money you spent on it.
It will degrade eventually if you pour it down a hole, but if you have a dog it may dig it up to eat it. Why not just put it in a contaner like an old vegetable oil bottle or pop bottle and put it in the trash? Easy way to dispose of it.
Why would you want to contaminate your soil...oil will find its way to your water source....call your local garbage people and get rid of it responsibly...

  • Can i substitute vegetable oil with butter in a cake recipe??

I am making a a make.. and i am out of vegetable oil. Could use butter? Can i substitute vegetable oil with butter in a cake recipe??
All of these are great substitutes for butter or shortening. You can't taste it in the cake either, plus it cuts out a lot of unnecessary fats.

    applesauce

    pureed prunes

    apple butter

    fruit-based fat substitutes

    ricotta cheese

    bananas (mashed)

oil (Avoid substituting oils for solid fats when baking cookies, cakes, and pastries; it will make the dish greasy and dense. If you must do so, substitute 3 parts oil for every 4 parts solid fat and consider increasing the amount of sugar and eggs in the recipe. Pie crusts made with oil aren't as flaky as those made with solid fat.)Can i substitute vegetable oil with butter in a cake recipe??
Q Can I substitute butter in place of oil in the cakes mixes that specify oil?

A Butter or margarine can be melted down and in its liquid form measured to the amount of oil necessary to the recipe. It should be cooled down however, before adding to the other ingredients.
actually no i wouldnt.. but i never use as much oil as the recipe calls for its too much.. EX if it says 1/2 cup or something ill put 2 or 3 TBL Spoons of oil and then orange juice or pineapple juice and yes im serious.. its healthier and NO you cant tell the difference lol .. try it once you'll see.. good luck and hope this helps.. and you can use applesauce too
Yes, you can. You can even use half applesauce and half oil for a substitute for the butter. Less fat and still tastes very good and moist.
Use a little more than a 1/2 cup to make up for water in the butter
    I would think you could
    i always do that

Is it possible to choke on vegetable oil?

. Someone dared me to drink a cup of vegetable oil, but I sorta choked on it, and I think I might have inhaled a drop or two... I don't know if it's my imagination or not but when I breathe in I think I feel it in my throat or lungs or something? Am I imagining it, and if not will anything bad happen to me?Is it possible to choke on vegetable oil?
You can choke on anything including fresh air. More fool you for drinking it. If you think some is in your lungs have a good cough and see your GP if things get worse. Is it possible to choke on vegetable oil?
you can choke on anything that fits in your esophogas...or however you spell it...

ive choked simply by breathing in to hard.

When you substitute Olive Oil for vegetable oil does it cause your cake to take longer to cook?

Do you substitute equal amounts or do you need to cut back on the Olive Oil amount? I have trouble getting my cake done and for years I have

cooked this recipe for years and never had this problem until the last few times I cooked it.When you substitute Olive Oil for vegetable oil does it cause your cake to take longer to cook?
There are a lot of factors that can change how a cake is baked that will change from day to day. Even little things like the temperature of the kitchen can throw off your cooking times. Because if this it is impossible to have a recipe that says ';cook for 34 minutes 15 seconds'; and have it come out perfect every time. Sometimes there will be a difference of several minutes in baking times.

Changing cooking oils should always be substituted in equal amounts. If the recipe calls for 1 cup, then use 1 cup of whatever oil.

The best way to tell if your cake is done is with the toothpick test. When the cake is getting close to being finished, simply poke a toothpick into the top of the cake and pull it out. If it comes out clean then your cake is done.

You never want to open the oven before the cake is 3/4 done. Use the baking time on your recipe and don't open the oven until after this 3/4 time mark has passed. You also want to take the cake out of the oven as soon as it is done as leaving it in for longer will dry out your cake. Finally when you take the cake out of the oven, you want to flip the cake out onto a rack (covered with a towel) since the pan will continue to bake the cake even after it is out of the oven.

Hopefully using some of these tricks, and all those mentioned will get your recipe tasting better than it ever did before.

    Hope this helps

CheersWhen you substitute Olive Oil for vegetable oil does it cause your cake to take longer to cook?
Since you should be using the same amount of oil, regardless of type, baking time should be the same. Only a slight difference in taste.

Is your oven temp accurate? Is this the same oven or a new one? You might want to check it with a cheap oven thermometer. Do other things seem to cook properly? Have you changed how you measure the flour or type of flour?

I'm just trying to give you some other things to think about if a successful recipe is no longer such a success!
olive oil is much '; slimier'; that some of the other oils and that is due to the fact it is a monounsaturated oil, most of the others are polyunsaturated, it changes the taste of cakes completely over sunflower or corn oil, I hate its taste and texture
Olive oil is not intended to be used in cakes, it's for salads primarily.

Use a light oil instead, like Canola, Safflower, or Corn Oil.

What is the chemical formula of vegetable oil?

Can anybody help me to find the chemical formula of vegetable oil? What is the chemical formula of vegetable oil?
The terminology applied to fats is based on the chemical structure of their molecules. Fats and oils belong to a group of biological substances called lipids. Lipids are biological chemicals that do not dissolve in water. They serve a variety of functions in organisms, such as regulatory messengers (hormones), structural components of membranes, and as energy storehouses. Fats and oils generally function in the latter capacity. Fats differ from oils only in that they are solid at room temperature, while oils are liquid. Fats and oils share a common molecular structure, which is represented by the formula below.

This structural formula shows that fats and oils contain three ester functional groups. Fats and oils are esters of the tri-alcohol, glycerol (or glycerine). Therefore, fats and oils are commonly called triglycerides, although a more accurate name is triacylglycerols. One of the reactions of triglycerides is hydrolysis of the ester groups.

I cant draw the structure here.

(Stearic acid (IUPAC systematic name: octadecanoic acid) is one of the useful types of saturated fatty acids that comes from many animal and vegetable fats and oils. It is a waxy solid, and its chemical formula is CH3(CH2)16COOH. Its name comes from the Greek word stear, which means tallow. The term stearate is applied to the salts and esters of stearic acid.)

Is it possible to run a home furnace on Vegetable oil or Biodiesel?

Oil hit $100/barrel today, my oil bill was outrageous (I live in the Northeast) before the price was this high. Since home heating oil is essentially diesel, and you can run Biodiesel/refined vegetable oil in a diesel powered automobile with virtually no modifications. Would it be possible to heat your home with these? Is it possible to run a home furnace on Vegetable oil or Biodiesel?
yes, but they don't want you to know that

i also am from the northeast, and i know that many people with above ground tanks, run it on kerosene because the oil jells in the extreme cold where kero does not.

you may have problems with bio oil jelling in the extreme cold but other than that it is fine

i guess you have never run out of oil in the middle of the night or on the weekend where you can't get oil right away

the solution was 5 or 10 gallons of either diesel or kerosene to get you through the night

since bio and petro diesels are essentially the same, and petro diesel is thinner than heating oil, it is fine

you shouldn't go up, but you can always go down

meaning you can put the thinner oils in the units that take the thicker ones, but you can't put the thicker ones in the units that use the thinner ones

if you put heating oil in a diesel car, the filters will clog over faster and have to be changed more often

but putting diesel through the heating unit, it will flow just fine

since it's thinner it may burn hotter and use a little more though

a simple nozzle change would remedy that problem if it even takes place at allIs it possible to run a home furnace on Vegetable oil or Biodiesel?

  • Do any of you run your diesel vehicles on vegetable oil straight from the supermarket?

At around 80 pence a litre its a lot cheaper than diesel. If you run 60% diesel to 40% veggie oil no modifications to your vehicle are needed.Do any of you run your diesel vehicles on vegetable oil straight from the supermarket?
There are so many myths associated with this, it's untrue..

Rudolf Diesel designed his engine specifically to run on peanut oil, but most diesel engines will work quite happily on a weak blend of veg oil and mineral diesel fuel.

My 1994 Citroen ZX 1.9 Diesel has been converted to run on veg oil. I run it on USED vegetable oil from an Indian restaurant which I filter through denim before I put it in the tank. If I have a temporary blip in supply of used oil, I buy the cheapest cooking oil available from a supermarket. My car has not experienced any problems in running on veg oil. I know a lot of people who mix veg oil and diesel fuel 50/50 for unconverted engines without any problems. But some types of diesel engine are more suitable than others. for running veg oil.

Depending upon the design of the engine, modification may be necessary to “thin” straight vegetable oil; this is usually done by adding heating to the fuel lines as vegetable oil when cold. Other modifications may include the installation of more robust glow plugs, a second tank for diesel fuel or biodiesel to aid starting in cold weather and modification to the fuel injectors. There is very little research available as to the effect of running a diesel engine on vegetable oil, but the experience of those who have tried it varies depending upon engine type. Many have gone for thousands of miles without modification, while others have suffered breakdowns after only hundreds of miles. Sometimes only minor engine differences can be vital. Experience indicates that the Peugeot/Citroen 1.9XUD or TXUD as found in Citroen BX, ZX and Xantia models and Peugeot 309/306/405/406 is eminently suitable to run vegetable oil PROVIDED it has a Bosch fuel pump and NOT a Lucas fuel pump. Likewise the VW 1.9 Diesel, found in many VW, Seat and Skoda models are suitable for running on vegetable oil. Engine modification can be undertaken personally, or, if like me, you’re a mechanical moron, get a mechanic to do it. There are few specialist garages around in the UK, but one I have found is at http://www.dieselveg.com.

And before anyone says, veg oil is classed as biofuel, so you don't have to pay duty on it provided you use less than 2,500 litres per year.

The alternative to modifying a diesel engine to run on vegetable oil, is to modify the oil to make it suitable for all diesel engines by the process of transesterification. To get the process right though, is time consuming and involves the use of some hazardous substances such as Methanol or Ethanol (highly flammable) which replaces the glycerides in vegetable oil using a catalyst such as Potassium Hydroxide (highly corrosive to organic substances, like skin).Do any of you run your diesel vehicles on vegetable oil straight from the supermarket?
I drive a VW Jetta with 56K miles on SVO.

check out http://www.goldenfuelsystems.com for more information Report Abuse

You have to add other chemicals to it to make it work properly otherwise you will knacker up your engine
I think you have to CLARIFY the oil first.
But your car smells like a chip shop! And you'll be prosecuted for not paying duty on it
It still has to be processed. It WOULD work in alot of turbine engines though.
    You are having a laugh!

If it was that easy the supermarket shelf's would be empty!

In UK they thought they had a little scam along similar lines.

They would pop over to Ireland fill up on Agricultural fuel, and smoke off back to UK.

A couple of months later, if they have not had there collar felt, by the customs and excise, Boom! I think I need a new motor Daaaaaaa!!!!!

Get the moral of this storey,
Tim C has given a very good answer. I run a Mitsubishi Pajero on a 50/50 mix of veggie and diesel it has done over 50k miles on this mixture with no problems loads of Pajero owners use it. You can also do a two tank conversion this would allow you to run 100% veggie just using the diesel to get it started. Don't forget to keep receipts for diesel and veggie so that you can prove that you are using less than 2500 litres a year just in case the customs ask, I have been dipped once they did'nt bother asking to see them as they had their hands full nicking people running on red diesel and heating oil.
A friend (yes, really, not me! Mine's petrol) had a Mk1 Clio 1.7D, which he ran for about a year on cooking oil. It went perfectly.

    Until it died. Dead engine.

Does anyone know HOW to substitute apple sauce for vegetable oil in recipes?

Do you use the same exact amount of applesauce as the amount of oil the recipe calls for? Any other ideas for healthier substitutions?Does anyone know HOW to substitute apple sauce for vegetable oil in recipes?
You can substitute the whole amount or just part if you want to. Be aware that using applesauce instead vegetable oil will change the consistency/density of your product. Some people prefer to only substitute 1/2 to keep the consistency closer to the original. My advice is to go by trial and error to find what you like. Try substituting all of it, if you don't like the consistency, cut back a little the next time.Does anyone know HOW to substitute apple sauce for vegetable oil in recipes?
It's the same amount the recipe asks for, to make it even heathier, then use honey instead of sugar, about 1/2 the amount on what it calls for sugar.
Yes, use the exact amount. Super easy and you really won鈥檛 be able to tell the difference! I do it all the time. Other than that- the only healthier option is an angel food cake.
Someone asked that very question the other day. The answer was ';it's the same';. In other words if the recipe calls for 1cup oil, sub 1 cup applesauce. Happy baking, Good luck.
yes you use the same amount.

    and idk about other choices
I've always used a 1:1 ratio and it's worked pretty well. You can also use prune puree in the same ratio.

I dont add the veg oil when I make brownies. They turn out fine, less caloriesIs there anything that I can use instead of vegetable oil?
yes sometimes when i make brownies i use canola oil,it doesn't ruin them or anything
Actually, canola or olive oil would be healthier; go for it. Please, save me a couple!
Yes canola oil would be perfect...
Canola oil is Veggie oil, YES use it.
You can get away with no oil at all
Canola will work just as good for brownies.Too bad you couldn't add 4 tbs of mayo.I do when I need oil and eggs...
Canola Oil is considered vegetable oil although after what I have read about it, I wouldn't use it in anything. Butter or margarine melted works good for a substitiution for oil. Even coconut oil is good for a substitution and will also give your brownies a coconut taste. There isn't much else out there though. I hope that helps. Send me one if they turn out good.
    Canola is fine.
sunflower seed oil is good as well
if you have apple sauce you can use the same amount as the oil, and it's much better for you.
I've never liked olive oil brownies...you can really taste the oil in them...use canola instead...
yes it will be fine i have even used olive oil lol it tasted just fine no difference
Yes!! I only use Canola oil. It is better for you anyway.

As long as the system is set up to burn it, no problem. Fuel oil is about the same viscosity, so I doubt that ther would be a lot of changes, if any. Consult a home-heating company, or better yet, ask a company that sells biodiesel if they know what adjustments you need to make, and if they do them. You may have to have your fuel tank emptied and cleaned, again ask the biodiesel company. Is it possible to run a home furnace on Vegetable oil or Biodiesel?
My mechanic runs his furnace at the shop on old motor oil he gets from oil changes, but he has to filter it first.

Im cooking Blueberry Muffins, is Olive oil the same as vegetable oil?

Ok so I'm making Blueberry Muffins. Im not sure where my vegetable oil is so is olive oil the same thing? Cause I know where that is.

So can I use olive oil as vegetable oil? I need to know quick. ThanksIm cooking Blueberry Muffins, is Olive oil the same as vegetable oil?
NO on the olive oil. It has a distinct flavor and would ruin blueberry muffins.

You need to use a vegetable oil. Saffola oil would be fine -- it is often used in cooking at high temperatures because it does not burn (like for frying chicken), but it would work in you muffin recipe.

Im cooking Blueberry Muffins, is Olive oil the same as vegetable oil?
You CAN make them with olive oil; just keep in mind that the more pronounced ';olivey'; flavour of the oil, the more you run the risk that this will be detected in the finished product.

I'm sure whatever you use, the flavours of vanilla (usually in blueberry muffins) as well as the blueberries themselves will cover the olive flavour.

    Cheers!
If it is virgin olive oil, it will be a bit funky tasting!!! If it is a cheap regular olive oil, the taste won't be as awful but will still be off. Stick with vegetable oil and save the olive oil for pastas and salads!!
Olive oil is A vegetable oil, but use only the very light one. You can also use melted butter or margarine in these if you wish. Just cool it so it isn't really hot when you pour it in the muffin mix.
No, you want to use a neutral oil, meaning something that does not have a flavor. Vegetable, Canola and I think Saffola Oil are neutral so they do not add any different flavor to what you are baking.
    Nooo!

I made that mistake once w/ brownies. They tasted disgusting!!! Don't do it.

You can use vegetable oil or canola oil.
NO ... unless you want your muffins to taste like olive oil. Just wait until you have the right ingredients, or you'll be wasting your time %26amp; money making something that will taste terrible
They are not the same and will taste bad. Try substituting applesauce for the oil if you have that.
NO!!! Not only will they taste terrible but if you eat a couple of them it will give you a sick stomach! They are not the same!
No, do not use Olive Oil. You're not supposed to fry or bake with olive oil.
    no no no

    they will taste awful

I'm cooking pasta salad, and it calls for vegetable oil. Is there any less fat substitute I can use instead?

Olive oil or grape seed oil have fat, but it's good fat that is healthy for you. Canola oil is another healthier alternative to vegetable oil. You can also use fat free Italian dressing, either vinaigrette style or creamy, depending on how you like your pasta salad.I'm cooking pasta salad, and it calls for vegetable oil. Is there any less fat substitute I can use instead?
Oil in general contains fat. What to be concious with is the amount of LDL or the low density lipoprotein or in laymans term is the bad cholesterol present in the foods or ingredients you prepare. I'm an undergraduate student and now i'm dealing with lowering cholesterol level using peanut oil. Peanut oil has a delicate an oriental taste and aroma. I suggest that if you want to cook pasta salad, try use peanut oil for the dressing. This must be new, but i guarantee you that it taste like the usual salad and not to mention that it will lower your bad cholesterol level.

I'm looking forward that you will try this!I'm cooking pasta salad, and it calls for vegetable oil. Is there any less fat substitute I can use instead?
you dont need any oil at all , just make sure you keep your eye on the pasta as it cooks then add some of the miracle whip ( after you strain the pasta ) there's a lot of oil in mayo you know ! or butter whatever the recipe is using !

isn't it odd we address the recipe's as a living (person ) assistant ??? we must be nut's _there i go again ! this is really corney -

    never mind
canola. olive oil has great flavor and other healthful properties and that's great in pasta salads.
Cannola oil or safflower oil is about as light as you can get.
you can actually use low cal itilian dressing its has very lite oil and it makes it taste pretty good
Vegetable oil was invented as a low fat substitute.
olive oil would be perfect, and you can find light olive oil at the store ... and olive oil is very healthy for you
Does it have to be oil? Could you use nonfat yogurt or sour cream instead? Or buy a good fat-free dressing?

  • Is it okay to give my dog a little vegetable oil in his food to improve coat shine and dry skin?

I do feed a very high quality food called Neutro and is very expensive. I buy the one to help with skin and coat.Is it okay to give my dog a little vegetable oil in his food to improve coat shine and dry skin?
Fish oil is probably the best but a tablespoon of any good quality oil will work well to improve coat quality. Once the coat improves reduce the frequency of the addition of oil. An occasional egg will help too.Is it okay to give my dog a little vegetable oil in his food to improve coat shine and dry skin?
The one who told you NOT to do it is one of THE MOST EXPERIENCED people on this board-and knows what they're talking about. Nutro IS a crappy food (google it) it's probably why your dog needs a supplement. Stay away from canola or vegetable oil, and be on the lookout for diarrhea (common with oil). Report Abuse

I'm sorry but Nutro isn't really a GREAT food. It's... okay... but ONLY the Ultra formulas, and SOME of the Natural Choice formulas. NEVER Nutro Max.

And BTW... that stuff is CHEAP! It's not expesnive!!!!!!!!!!! Report Abuse

That's fine, as long as it is not every day and in moderation. Otherwise, it will act as a laxative. The best kind is fish oil as it contains a lot of Omegas which promote skin and coat health. You can also feed eggs once in a while (at most one or two egg yolks, not whites, once a week) which do wonders for skin and coat.

Something random I discovered and was okayed by my vet is the use of a product called Ferretone. I have ferrets, and discovered my dog absolutely loved the taste of this stuff. It's designed specifically to make ferrets' coats and skin healthier, and as they are carnivores, it's safe for dogs, too. It's best to buy the liquid in a bottle and drizzle over food, than to buy the treats, as those have corn syrup in them. Just something I thought I'd suggest, but be sure to ask your vet about anything like that before trying it.

Make sure you're brushing, trimming, and bathing your dog appropriately. If there are any rashes, lots of dandruff, or other irritations going on, take your dog to the vet, as it may have allergies. Food allergies to grains and chicken are very common.

It's worth mentioning that Nutro is a good food, but there are better brands out there such as Wellness, Natural Balance, and Fromm which may make your dog's coat look a lot better than Nutro. Nutro also has a lot of filler--not as much as say Pedigree--but there are corn products, and that's always a no-no. On the adult lamb and rice, for example, the first ingredient is lamb meal followed by three or four rice products and/or other carbs (peas I think?). This means that food is NOT mainly meat-based, and dog food should always have meat listed in the first 2 (preferably 3 or 4) ingredients...

Sorry for the really long answer, lol. Hope this answered your question though.
Nutro isn't such a great food...it's been recalled more than once in the last few years, and has quite a reputation for causing vomiting-many people claim Nutro has actually killed their dogs. For less money than the Nutro, you could feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul-higher quality and cheaper. Other great choices would be Innova, California Natural, Healthwise, Canidae, Merrick, Prairie, or Solid Gold. With the California Natural that I feed my dogs, I no longer supplement at all. If you need to add to your dog's food, your vet can sell you a product by Virbac (Efa-Z) to help with adding vitamins and oils, or you could give your dog fish oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, or any number of over the counter supplemental oils (like Lambert-Kay Shed Relief). Many oils will help the skin/coat, but I'd stay on the side of healthy...look for linoleic acid in the nutritional information, and stay away from hydrogenated oils and ones containing trans-fats...they are no more healthy for dogs than they are for us. If I had to recommend a single thing to add to the dog's diet, it would be fish oil, followed by olive oil.
Fish oil, sunflower oil, and olive oil are the only things I would recommend. Vegetable and canola oil aren't really that great. Olive oil is proven to lengthen human life, so I'm sure it would be good for your doggy too. Sunflower oil will really shine up that coat, and fish oil is rich in omega 3s. Good luck.
Sunflower oil is great for dogs coat and skin, be careful, too much and your dog will be pooping all over. Most super premium dog foods have sunflower oil in them.

I use a supplement called ';Dinovite'; and has done wonders for my dogs' coats and skin, I have three Australian Shepherds.
Probably fish oil is best. I always just gave my lab a little regular margerine every day--maybe a teaspoon. And an egg every 3 or 4 days. She got a really shiney, soft coat when I went on weight wathchers and gave her the extra veggies, too.
I would recommend feeding a high quality food rich in protein and healthy fats. If a dog is fed a proper diet it will naturally have a healthy coat and skin.
I give my dog a couple of beaten eggs and a bit of garlic every now and then and her coat is really glossy. I don't know about the oil as it may have a laxative effect?
As well as giving your dog oil, you should consider changing his food. The dog food which you are using contains rice which is grain and grain creates acidity within the blood, hence the dry skin.
My dog had really dry skin and the vet suggested putting fish oil on his food to help his skin and coat. Its very healthy for them, it not only helps their coats but their skin as well. Good luck
yup, it think it should be fine. I even read from this article that doing this twice a day is just fine.

    http://dogtime.com/coat.html
    Completely useless waste of money!

Your auntie doesn't know wtf she's talking about.

%26amp; don't put it ON the dog either!
sunflower or fish oil would be good for your dog.
Just dribble a little animal fat over her food....bacon drippings...hamburger drippings...that is the best oil.

Are there any substitutes for Vegetable Oil?

and i mean other than a different kind of oil cuz i am out of oil and i am making brownies. So if you help me i would be glad to give you some. Are there any substitutes for Vegetable Oil?
applesause- trust meAre there any substitutes for Vegetable Oil?
Apple sauce, like everyone else suggested, is good, mashed bananas will work, and mayonnaise will work, too. It will not make your brownies taste like mayo, I promise! Good luck!
    apple sauce.

The best substitute is baby food prunes.
    Water, olive oli, apple sauce
Take lard --- but that is not very healthy. Yeah it is just the opposite very healthy. Your brownies are called in German ';Schmalzgeb盲ck'; (= lard cookies). But not very healthy. Today I'

ll take for my brownies sunfloweroil.

    apple sauce.
    Peanut Oil...Olive Oil...
Melted butter, margarine, shortening, applesauce is nice for a low fat version.
you can substitute apple sauce for part but not all of it but you can also use butter or shortening
    try apple sauce
    butter or margarine.
You can replace the oil, with applesauce, or just some pureed fruit, it doesn't have to applesauce and it is good tasting and good for you.

How much vegetable oil would I substitute for butter?

My recipe for chocolate chip cookies says to use one stick of butter (1/2 cup), BUT im out of butter, so how much vegetable oil should i use in the place of the butter?? THIS IS URGENT THERE ARE 4 LITTLE KIDS IN NEED OF MY COOKIES!!! THANKS!How much vegetable oil would I substitute for butter?
you can use equal amounts of butter to oil but in cookies butter is needed to prevent the cookie form spreading so you should add extra flour like 1/2 cup. Or if you have shortening that would work better. How much vegetable oil would I substitute for butter?
1/4 cup oil or 1/2 cup applesauce
well idk if using oli instead of butter is such a great idea but i would say maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of a cup no more.

What car runs best on vegetable oil (biodiesel)?

I have a friend that converted a suburban into running on biodiesel, but I want something smaller. Does anyone have any experience with converting a car? Which kind of car would work best? What car runs best on vegetable oil (biodiesel)?
Any diesel engine can run on bio diesel. You will suffer on power and fuel economy. What car runs best on vegetable oil (biodiesel)?
it has to be a diesel motor to run on vegteble oil and some conversions do have to be made to the carb. they do make slug bugs that have diesel motors
Vegetable oil is not biodiesel. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil by adding chemicals. If you want to run a car off of straight vegetable oil, you will need an extra tank to store the oil as well as another pump, hoses going into the injectors, and something to switch the source of fuel from diesel to oil (you have to start the car on diesel).

Biodiesel is much simpler, and it doesn't require any modifications to run on a diesel vehicle.
All diesel vehicles can run on vegetable oil, I really recomend that you thoroughly clean the vegetable oil if you plan to get it from mcdonalds or burger king or other fast food restraunts.
any car with a diesel engine will run on biodiesel trust me i know i use it. you dont loose fuel econ, or performence, in fact you gane some. But some times if you do the blend just alittle of and dont get all the drop out. you will clog the filter in the engine but not hard to replace and cheap. considering i make biodiesel for 70 cents a gal. here is where i got my processor for making biodiesel www.homebiodiesel.com

I put vegetable oil on my hamsters wheel?

I have a hamster wheel, and it is so squeeky it drives me crazy! I will try to sleep and the hamster wheel will be squaking and squeaking away! So, I have to take out the wheel and I feel bad about that. I decided to take the wheel out of its holder thing and rub vegetable oil on the axle and all around it, it was really silent when they ran on it but then they started licking it off the axle, will this hurt them in any way? If so, how?I put vegetable oil on my hamsters wheel?
It is fine to oil the wheel and it will not harm them if they lick a bit. In fact, oil is good for their coats and many people feed their pets a bit in their food. People sometimes eat a specail kind of oil (fish oil or flaxseed oil) to keep them healthy and make their skin and hair in better condition. When I was young, I was worried as well but it is such a lifesaver. My pets are happy, and so am I!I put vegetable oil on my hamsters wheel?
I don't believe so, it has never hurt any of my dogs to eat it, and sometimes my dad puts a little with their food to make their coats shiney. Maybe this should be a one time thing, If nothing happens to them, I guess it will be ok to try it again.
Vegetable oil is harmless; that's why I recommend it for running wheels. You can also use petroleum jelly.
I do it all the time!! The hamster(s) mite get oily fur that looks wet. but if they are licking it off the wheel it can't be too much oil!
Not in small amounts, but if they eat too much, they will get overweight. It won't kill them or anything.
    No, it will be fine.

All it would do will give it a glossier coat ^_^
No I do it all the time

How much does it cost to convert your car to run on vegetable oil?

Click this link for instructions on how to turn your old diesel vehicle into a used vegetable oil recycler and get fuel for free at the local fast food joint. You have to strain the residue out, but it's free.

Note: The amount you save may be worth it if you have access to an older diesel vehicle to convert, some mechanical ability and a lot of determination.

This might be something to consider trying out in the near future. How much does it cost to convert your car to run on vegetable oil?
Not worth it id say. doesn't vegetable oil cost like.. 3 dollars for 2 liters?
Well 1st of all your car must be a diesel.
Gallon for gallon, the cost of vegatable oil costs double what regular gasoline fuel does. Why would you want to do this?
yes your car does have to be diesel. and you have to be willing to go to fast food joints to get their used veggie oil for free. that's were you save the money.

Next, filter it, so it is clean of solids like fries and filet-o-fish bits. Then make a seperate tank in your car to hold the grease. Next find a way to keep it hot. Cold grease doesn't flow well and will stop up your fuel lines. Last make a valve system to switch back and forth from diesel to grease. You must start and stop the engine on diesel fuel to prevent the cold grease from stopping the lines up. Works great if your willing to go through alot of crap just to save some money. Cost wise I'd not pay someone to install it BIG $$$$

  • How do you extract the vegetable oil,the fruits or seeds of plant?

    *Crushing

    *Evaporating

    *Hardening them.

    Crushing would be my answer.

When baking, you use vegetable oil. How does it differ from using olive oil instead?

Olive oil has a stronger flavor. That's why we use the other stuff. When baking, you use vegetable oil. How does it differ from using olive oil instead?
For baking purposes, like cakes I use canola oil cause it doesn't add any odd flavors to my cakes, etc. For bread baking, I usually use olive oil. The difference with using olive oil, especially extra virgin, is that it has a strong flavor that you'll taste in your baked cakes. I want a cake that tastes like vanilla, chocolate or whatever flavor it's supposed to be, and not offset with the taste of olive oil. It's the same with cooking - do I want the flavor or not? Am I frying or not? Olive oil burns at a lower point than canola oil, which burns at a lower point than peanut oil. When baking, you use vegetable oil. How does it differ from using olive oil instead?
Well i prefer using olive oil because it is healthier and it tatse better!
depends on what you are baking with it. I would use olive oil for savory dishes and a light veg oil for sweet things like cakes.

olive oil is a bit heavy and fruity (olive tasting).. not something you want in a lovely white cake. it has a low smoke point as well so you can't deep fry with it. it will smoke and catch on fire at high enough temps. even pan frying and sauteing you have to be careful not to burn it..yucky!

olive oil is great though for roasting. one of my faves is to drizzle olive oil on to asparagus and toss to coat, then sprinkle on fresh finely minced garlic.. roast until tender. I am hungry just thinking about it! then there are wonderful grade olive oils that I would not recommend cooking with at all but use to dip good crusty bread in..yum!

Can I substitute shortening with vegetable oil?

I know I could use butter but I just ran out and the store just closed.

If I can use veggie oil, at what ratio? Can I substitute shortening with vegetable oil?
No, oil is to thin to make icing it will be to loose. Can I substitute shortening with vegetable oil?
I don't think it would work unless the recipe calls for the shortening or butter to actually be MELTED - then it would be OK. but if it's just supposed to be softened, then the oil will not work.

Maybe you can find a cooked icing recipe to use instead, then the veggie oil would work. You would want to flavor that icing with extract or something, though, because normally you use butter for flavor %26amp; veggie oil is pretty flavorless.

Is there a substitute for vegetable oil for making a cake?

It's Sunday and we don't want to go to the store however, we planned on making a cake but have no vegetable oil. Any substitutes? Is there a substitute for vegetable oil for making a cake?
    A healthy substitute is applesauce.

No one will notice the difference :)

I sometimes use it if I want to make a delicious cake without feeling guilty about all the fat in it.

Good luck.Is there a substitute for vegetable oil for making a cake?
A very healthy alternative is applesauce - I do it all the time since I have soy (oil) allergies. Whatever the amount of oil it calls for - use the same amount of applesauce. Comes out very moist.
    Substitutes:

    corn oil

    OR safflower oil

    OR melted shortening

(I would use canola oil if I had it)
just look for a recipe that takes margarine instead of oil. there are also recipes that use miracle whip to make a chocolate cake- just check you cookbook.
Any oil can be substituted, but the flavor might be different. And I give credit to the applesauce suggestion--that's a good one. It gets a thumbs up!
do you have any other type of oil? Even extra virgin olive oil will work, if not use melted butter, it will be very rich with a nice buttery flavor.
    applesauce
uses margarine all the time melt first

How do plants grow in vegetable oil?

if you find the answer, can you give me the website it came from? thanksHow do plants grow in vegetable oil?
can they? How do plants grow in vegetable oil?
The oil would suffocate them. They don't.
Vegetable fats and oils are substances derived from plants that are composed of triglycerides. Nominally, oils are liquid at room temperature, and fats are solid; a dense brittle fat is called a wax. Although many different parts of plants may yield oil, [1] in actual commercial practice oil is extracted primarily from the seeds of oilseed plants.

The temperature-based distinction between oils and fats is imprecise, since the temperatures of rooms vary, and typically any one substance has a melting range instead of a single melting point.

Triglyceride vegetable fats and oils include not only edible, but also inedible vegetable fats and oils such as linseed oil, tung oil, and castor oil, used in lubricants, paints, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial purposes. Although thought of as esters of glycerin and a varying blend of fatty acids, in fact these oils contain free fatty acids and diglycerides as well

What else would I need and more importantly, what do I need to know about oil recycling. Additionally, where can I find the information neccessary to be legal in Florida? What do I need to do and know to open a waste vegetable oil recycling business in Florida?
You should definitely check with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. They can guide you through the permitting process for creating an ';active'; facility. Also, they sponsor a low interest recycling loan program. If I remember correctly (and it may have changed..) the interest rate starts at the current prime rate and goes down based on your credit rating.

Florida is a very good state for looking at increasing recycling in (I know...I live there!). Regarding the business side of things, you need to check with the Deparment of Business and Professional Regulation about getting an ';official'; business created. You'll also need to check with your county for a permit as well.

In terms of getting material, you would best be served checking with the local restaurants and seeing what they are doing with their grease/oil now. If they are charging, you should look to see if you can charge less (and you should charge....garbage removal is a valid service that businesses should pay) but enough less to entice them to choose you over their current solution.

You should also check into the new energy bill that was signed by the President. Despite the negative publicity around it because it doesn't do much (and it really doesn't...) I believe it did re-fund certain programs through various Federal agencies (both grant %26amp; loan) that are focused on alternative fuels production/infrastructure.

    Hope this helps!

What type of triglyceride would vegetable oil, butter and shortening be?

    Butter- the good kind.

Vegetable oil and shortening- the bad kind.

Canola oil is much better for you than vegetable oil. :))

How do you dispose of vegetable oil from a deep fryer?

I have a green bin could I put it in there? How do you dispose of vegetable oil from a deep fryer?
If you're throwing it out, then yes, use the green bin. It is food, so is biodegradable. How do you dispose of vegetable oil from a deep fryer?
If you plan on re-using it, pour it in a measuring cup then pour it back in the bottle.

If your throwing it out, I usually get like 2 to 3 plastic bags to double it, pour the oil in a measuring cup then pour it in the bags and tie the bag up so it doesn't leak in the garbage can or take it outside to the garbage.
Not a good idea for the green bin.

Get a sealed container and dispose of in the regular trash.

Deep fryer oil can be strained and reused. Just run the oil through a fine mesh strainer, and store the oil in a well sealed container, in a cool dark place.
I usually put it into a jug and then put it into the bottle from the oil I replaced it with (if that makes sense lol) and then I just put in my general waste bin.
Empty it into a empty milk carton with a funnel, tape the lid to the top and stick it in the rubbish!

How do I make soap from lye and vegetable oil?

There must be some kind of easy little recipe right?

Like add the lye first to some water or something like that? How do I make soap from lye and vegetable oil?
That's a start but soap making requires a fair amount of research before you begin mixing up a batch.

    Generally it goes like this:

    1. Weigh out your liquid and lye. Add the lye to the water and stir until combined.

    2. Weigh out the oils, place in a stainless steel pot and melt.

    3. When the oils reach about 90 - 95 degrees F. and the lye cools to about the same temperature they can be combined.

    4. Pour the lye solution slowly into the oils and stir with a whisk to combine.

    5. When the mixture become thick and opaque, it will be ready to mold. This thickening is called tracing and can be anywhere from 5 minutes to days depending on your ingredients.

    6. Once the mixture is traced, pour it into the mold and cover with a blanket.

    7. Leave it to rest for the next 24 hours. It will heat up and then cool down. Once it is cool, you can unmold the soap.

    8. Cut the soap into bars and let the bars cure for 4 to 6 weeks. Until the cure time is over, the soap will be very harsh. The longer you let the soap cure, the gentler the soap will be.

These instructions should not be used to make soap but are just a general description of the process.

The following web site has recipes and step-by-step soap making instructions as well as information about the equipment and supplies you need to make soap successfully.

Soap is basically a non-polar fatty acid with a polar cation (like Na+) on the ionizable oxygen on the fatty acid. The reaction folllows this equation:

    Acid(Fatty Acid) + Strong Base --%26gt; Salt(Soap) + water

For example a reaction producing soap from stearic acid and sodium hydroxide is:

    C17H35COOH(s) + NaOH(aq)--%26gt; C17H35COONa(aq) +H2O
You need to boil the vegetable oil with the lye. No water. Be careful of the lye and the hot oil. 90oC is not the correct temperature. Oil will not boil at that temp. The soap will clump at the top and can be skimmed off.
ok...it's a little lengthy to explain - check out this website

Can I use melted margarine in place of vegetable oil?

The recipe for strawberry bread calls for 11/4 cup vegetable oil. All I have is one cup vegetable oil. Can I use melted margarine to fill the rest? Can I use melted margarine in place of vegetable oil?
I think the melted margarine would work, but may I give you a friendly word of advice and caution? Please do not use margarine in your diet. Real butter is much better for you. It's a fact, though , of course, it should be used in small amounts for fat restriction. The molecules in the margarine don't break down in the body like real butter. You can research it further if you're interested. Can I use melted margarine in place of vegetable oil?
    yes
yes you can ive done it before
I would think that small amount shouldn't harm it. If it was the whole thing, I'd say no, margarine seems to have water in it.
    yes.
    sure can. :)

  • What can I use as a substitute for vegetable oil in cupcakes?

Can I use butter? I really dislike the heavy taste oil has in my cupcakes. What can I use as a substitute for vegetable oil in cupcakes?
No, don't use butter or margarine. It has a completely different makeup. Try canola oil, which is lighter.

Don't use walnut oil--it should not be heated. What can I use as a substitute for vegetable oil in cupcakes?
Absolutely butter works... Keep in mind that oil adds tenderness. Your leavening choice (baking soda / powder in this case) is what determines the heaviness. Only too much oil will create the heavy taste you are talking about because it messes with the leavening agents...

My advice would be to use refined (or virgin) coconut oil. I use it almost exclusively for substitutes in my baking. The reason is that not only does it bring all of the benefits of shortening, is very heart health, skin tone healthy, but it also will not make you fat. Meaning, coconut oil is primarily MCT's, and so they are simply used for energy and not fat storage...

Also, one other note... If you use virgin you will notice a subtle coconut flavor is add to the mix. I really like it because it adds a complex flavor that most cannot determine what it is, but if you do not want this, then just use the refined (but slightly less healthy) version... Any Walmart has it...

Good Luck and Happy Baking... :)
I use unsweetened applesauce. I would not suggest olive oil, it contains flavors you don't want in cupcakes, but canola oil would be an exchange. Exchanging melted butter for oil will work, but you may have some issues with added salt in the butter and the moisture difference
You can use butter. You can also use a the same flavor of instant pudding. Just add a small box of the same flavor pudding to the mixture and it will make them light and fluffy and moist. DON'T MIX THE PUDDING WITH THE MILK. Just use the powder.
you can certainly use margarine. or Canola oil is good, too. A cupcake cookbook I have uses either Canola oil or margarine in all their recipes.
I use extra virgin olive oil in pretty much everything and I don't mind the fruity olive taste in sweets. Butter's fine, or margarine.
I think canola oil is much lighter
    walnut are grape seed oil.

What is something you can use instead of vegetable oil for brownies?

I'm trying to bake a pick-me-up for my friend by the time she gets back from interview today, I put in all the brownie mix, then remembered I had absolutely no vegetable oil. What's a good substitute for 2/3 cup of vegetable oil? What is something you can use instead of vegetable oil for brownies?
You can substitute pretty much any oil for vegetable oil (which is soybean oil) in the recipe. However, you should take two points into consideration when choosing a different oil: flavor and temperature.

For flavor, you want to pick an oil that will either taste neutral or will complement the flavor of the brownies. I would recommend canola oil since it is pretty much neutral but has a slight buttery taste.

For temperature, you want to use an oil which has a smoke point above what it will be cooked at in the oven. You should be able to find the smoke points of different oils online. My canola oil has a smoke point of 425 degrees F. If the recipe uses a temperature equal to or less than 425, I would again recommend canola oil.

Finally, canola oil is healthier than soybean oil. Canola oil has less saturated fat and more monounsaturated fat.

In conclusion, I would recommend 2/3 cup of canola oil. What is something you can use instead of vegetable oil for brownies?
You're nice! You can use applesauce instead of oil. Use the same amount, so 2/3 c applesauce. Will prob be sweeter and softer than it would be with the oil, but that's okay for most people. (Don't use cinnamon flavored applesauce.)
Lard. Canola oil. I have heard that apple sauce will do the trick, too, but I have never tried it. Or was that to replace eggs? Otherwise, I'm afraid you're going to need the oil or it just isn't going to work right.
The perfect substitute is unsweetened applesauce, but you can also use plain yogurt or even canned pumpkin puree (all measured to 2/3 cup).
You can try a healthier alternative by using olive oil or grapeseed oil. Or my favorite, I Cannot Believe It's Not Butter. All are better alternatives than just vegatable oil. Hope this helps.
melted margarine, gives them a better taste
    apple sauce
    apple sauce
    apple sauce
i try them with mango jam .they were yummy.

How long and under what conditions can waste vegetable oil be stored prior to converting into bio-diesel?

I plan to accumulate waste vegetable oil from restaurants now to convert to bio-diesel at some later time. I was wondering if the cooking oil was stored too long a time would it degrade or spoil resutling in bad fuel? How long and under what conditions can waste vegetable oil be stored prior to converting into bio-diesel?
It depends on what you were planning to do to convert it to bio-diesel. In general the oil can be kept for a long time. Best to filter all solids out of it, and keep in an airtight container with only a very small air space, to reduce oxidation. How long and under what conditions can waste vegetable oil be stored prior to converting into bio-diesel?
If it contains ANY meat fats it could easily go rancid.

The product you pickup will vary greatly from time to time and place to place (water content, solids etc). Without knowing exactly what you have on hand, no one can give you a precise time...and even what temperature you store it at will make a difference. Also it is important to find out local ordinances for storage, some areas treat it as seriously as hazardous waste or used motor oil. How much and how long you can store may be a matter of law.

It would stink to make cheap fuel and have to figure in a $1000+ fine into the equation. Do the homework.

Also, after you make your homebrew, you must still pay all roadtaxes (federal, state, local). Personally I would just find out who I could get the WVO from and research local laws before I'd store any on site.....some areas may even require sprinkler systems (fire codes) for on site storage.

After all that, many areas limit the amount of (finished) fuel that can be stored on site, without expensive safety measures... just like storing regular, petroleum diesel.

Here's an excellent resource on biodiesel:

    http://www.biodieselnow.com/
colder the better...in 80/90 degrees id say it will rot in a week,,,,mike sez it...if screened and cooled to 40/50 degrees...it should last many weeks even several months
I spoke with a booth at the Energy Round-Up. They stated 6 months before significant biodegradation would occur. I suppose this would be altered if it was not strained, had O2 access etc. They said the fuel might last another 6 mo with the addition of an algalcide.

Consider the purity, amount of light and temp iin prolonging it. If it gets a little rancid, probably will be OK.

Can I use crisco shortening as substitute for vegetable oil?

I do not have vegetable oil in the house but I have olive oil and crisco all vegetable shortening. Can I use crisco shortening as substitute for vegetable oil?
You can but crisco has more saturated fat and possibly trans fat(unless it says otherwise on the label) which is bad for your heart. Can I use crisco shortening as substitute for vegetable oil?
yeah, but crisco is gross. Its like pure fat.
Depends on what the application is......frying, baking, sauteing, etc......If you need it for say, frying, say, potatoes and onions, sure you can.....if you need it for baking, sure, just sub out the butter/margarine called for and use the Crisco....for sauteing say onion, garlic, celery and carrots to say go into a soup/stew, use the olive oil.....Enjoy!!!!

    Christopher
    Yep!
Sure, if you want to incur god's wrath
As a last resort but shortening is really bad for you If this is a cake use the olive oil
    Yes
Yes, you can. Simply melt the shortening prior to measuring for your recipe. A glass cup with spout is ideal and it takes about 50 seconds in a microwave on 100% power to melt 1/2 C..
my wife uses it all the time.personally i like it better.
I used Crisco when I had no liquid oil and made popcorn. It worked beautifully.
Best is to use the olive oil and throw away all the shortening and vegetable oils if they are not cold pressed because they contain partially dehydrogenated oil which cause healh problems such as headache, hormone issues, cardiovascular problems,etc...
I agree with bobi, I do it all the time.
yes if you are just going to fry some thing in a plan you can use the shorting.
It works great as a substitute for KY,

    so why not?
    to grease a pan...yes

    to use in a recipe...no

Is there anything I can use instead of vegetable oil?

I'm making a cake and we don't have any vegetable oil. We live right next to a Kroger, but I don't have enough money to buy some. Is there anything I can use instead of it, and if I didn't add any oil at all, would it still taste the same?Is there anything I can use instead of vegetable oil?
try using margerine or butter. Is there anything I can use instead of vegetable oil?
Butter or canoli oil are even better than Vegitable oil. Healthier. The cake would taste dry if you didn't use the oil. In some recipes, you can substitute Olive oil for butter, or other oils, but in a cake , olive oil would be too strong and heavy. Good luck!
Applesauce works great! And it makes it lower in fat content! I use it for all of my baking needs!
applesauce, or a fruit puree of some sort would work. I believe it's 1:1 as far as measurements go. The oil is there to keep the cake moist. The applesauce would add an extra flavour to the party, but you can say it adds ';depth of flavour'; :)
You can substitute apple sauce for oil. It makes it much healthier and it will taste the same.
you can use mayo ........ and it makes it moist actually taste pretty good .....just think it is oil and eggs

I've heard that applesauce works well in cakes, and is better for you.
You might try Crisco but I'm not totally sure .
margerine is vegtable oil that has been whipped with added stabilizers. If you use margarine you should be fine be sure to melt it first.
though it sounds strange, i've used mayonaise and it worked well. apple sauce also works and is fat free.
