One of my teachers asked me this question. He told us to compare how a glass rod submerged in vegetable oil would look compared to how it looks when it is out of it and just in air. What would a glass rod submerged in vegetable oil look like?
How a glass rod would look immersed within a transparent liquid is dependent on the index of refraction of the liquid relative to air. the greater the index of refraction, the greater the angle of bending of the image of the glass rod.
If looking at the glass rod from within the liquid, most likely is that you get total reflection, so you see a mirror image of the glass rod, but do not see the rod outside of the liquid.
